there are the for settings in my maxima for the heater 1-2-3-4 the only one that works is 4 - any idea what could be the problem?

It's in the FAQ. Most likely you need to replace a part called blower motor registor. Changed mine recently myself and it's real easy to do. The price of the part was like 5 bucks. Anyway all the information you need is in the FAQ.
