turbo questions

My friend with a mr2 wants to go turbo but there aren't many mr2 forums out there so I thought maybe you all could help. Here were his questions:

1) lets say you were to take the dsm turbo. Get all your parts for making the turbo work, manifold, piping, lines, etc... If you had NO boost controller what psi would your car run at (factory setting)?

2) if you do get a boost controller for your setup, and turn the boost down to 5psi (lets say stock boost is at 11psi), what would happen with the internal wastegate? The wastegate has a spring pressure set at factory setting (11psi), so would the turbo not be able to boost that low and let the stock pressures take over?

Sorry if these were stupid questions but we do not know much about turbos. Thanks ahead of time.

arent factory settings controlled by the spring on the wastegate?

the boost controller is usually lower than the wastegate spring. it leaks boost at the specified psi.

If you had no boost controller, then you would run what the factory spring in the wastegate opens up at.

If you turn the boost down to 5psi when the spring in the wastegate is 11lbs, it will do nothing. It will continue to spool to 11lbs. In order for the boost controller to work at a lower level, the wastegate spring has to be the lower than the lowest setting you plan on going with your wastegate.
