interior mod, help me out
interior mod, help me out
ok i have a black 96 max with tan interior, i want to paint the dash and other components black. i wanted to know what type of paint to use and if there is any sort of steps behind this. any info would help me out a lot. thanks
I would just see if I could find a black int max in a wrecking yard somewhere and take all the pieces you need. If not then painting might be kinda tough
Take all the pieces out of the car (dont try to paint them while in there) and get to a dry, clean place where there is no dust flying around.
You have to clean the plastic pieces really good (plastic pieces right?) with soapy water and if you want, alcohol. you can spray primer on, but try to get a dark primer if you want it black. make sure its the primer used with plastics. put some primer on lightly, let dry then sand. put a couple coats of primer, just make sure every coat is smooth and clean. If it drips, you just messed up your paint job. its important you take your time.
use some high-temp black paint if you want, or if you want gloss then, i forgot what base but i think its enamel based paint you should get. you can buy all this stuff at pep boys or autozone. dont use general purpose paint it sucks. spray on the black paint lightly and evenly and let dry. you can sand after each coat to make it smooth if you want. you can put about 2-3 coats of black paint or until it looks good. just make sure it drys after each coat; or else itll be gooey and take days to dry. You dont want the paint too thick either. TAKE YOUR TIME.
after you paint your stuff black, youll want to put clear coat on it. you probably dont want to sand the clear coat as thats the final coat and itll look retarded.you can put a couple coats of clear on it and it should last a long time.
Make sure everything is completely dry, give it a day or 2 to COMPLETELY dry. I know how it feels when you want to put your pieces in and see how they look, but trust me its worth the wait.
If youre going for an OEM look youll want to stay away from gloss black; use at most a semi-gloss, but i prefer flat paint as it matches better.
This isnt really detailed, but i hope it helps. remember, try to get oem pieces first, if not then paint. and TAKE YOUR TIME.
Piece.
