Transmission fluid change in manual

Whats the story w/ changing transmission fluid. Some people I have talked to say you dont need to change the fluid in a manual? Is this true? Others say change it w/ your 60K service. Whats the deal.
IF it does need to be changed, when does it need to be done and whats the best fluid it should it be replaced with? and are additives necessary?
Thanks

I doubt you're going to find a way to tell the last time it was done. That is, unless it was never done, and abused ... the the fluid will look burned. Anyone have the procedure for this, and the type of fluid they used. Bought the car used as well, and would like to make sure everything is up to date.

I would just go ahead and change it with a good quality oil. I personally have been using Amsoil and Redline MT-90. If you can change the motor oil for your engine, this is just as easy. You will need 5 qts (tranny uses like 4.XX).

Here is a link to change out the oil. Linky Linky

Damn, you guys are fast. Thanx for the link ... looks easy enough. Since that page shows it being done on a '97 .... anyone know if its any different on an '01?

There is no "sensor" to pull. If you are looking at the top of the battery down to the tranny, you will see a sunken 1/2" Bolt for the fill. Go underneath and pull the drain plug then release this bolt. It will allow for quick draining. Before you undo the drain bolt, make sure you have the correct one. I think its a 10MM and its the only 10MM in the area.

Also, if you dont have an intake already, pull the snorkel off (with the air temp sensor in it) and it makes it MUCH easier to access and fill.

Is there a magnet that picks up metal shavings in the manual transmission? If there is you could look at the magnet to try to gauge if the fluid was ever changed.

Who told you that garbage? I guess you don't have to if you don't want your tranny to last
