Alright...5spd, brand new tranny, brand new clutch and flywheel, motor mounts are brand new with poly, both axles are brand new

Now, cruizing at 50 in 5th, all you 5spd guys, if you pulse the gas....gas, gas, gas what does the engine do ?>??

I think something is off on my engine (Coil packs ??) cause the engine feels like it boggs...very hard to explain...gas gas gas...the engine almost meeses up and boggs in inself then catches up to itself

the car is responsive but bogs bogs bogs then catches up to itself..

cant be:
trans
clutch
moter mounts
axles

I think its just the car cause my buddies 5spd max does the same thing
any ideas

I believe I have it too, almost unnoticable, I just don't pay atention to it.

 

I can cruise around 50 even 40mph in 5th all day. If I gas it, it will make the engine/intake make that sucking noise and deeper exhaust but no bogging at all. if anything, it goes faster

 

There is not a lot of pulling power doing 50mph in 5th gear. Blipping the gas doesn't do a whole lot--very gradually increasing speed. I wouldn't necessarily call that bogging--try the same in a 4 banger...now that's bogging!

 

Its almost not a bogging....I can Cruise at 50 even 40 in 5th jsut like you ALLLL day too...IM not saying that im sayin if you gas it then gas off then gas on...what does your car do ??

I know what you are describing, I have the same thing. I think it is normal, maybe something in the computer to help the car transition from on/off/on/off gas in traffic. I would not worry. It has happened to me maybe twice in 2 years of ownership.

 

I think I might know what you're talking about. When I push the gas then left off, then back on, the car may jerk/jump a little. I can notice it, but most people in the car can't.

just tried it and nope nothing like you describe, how do your rpms look?

 

They stay where they are...actaully they advance alittle bit because your giving it gas..

 

its usually 2K - 3K give a little punch and the car goes nuts...I really think this is normal or something majorly wrong with my Hydrolic Clutch

What actually happens? The tach moves out of sync with the speedo? You decelerate when you hit the gas? The car jerks forward/backwards? Makes a weird noise?

 

Car jerks back and forth....almost the engine does...very hard to explain....its bad enough that my exhaust hits on the back

Is it a scaled down version of what happens when you pulse the throttle in 1st/2nd? That jerky 'I don't know how to drive stick ' feeling?

 

No your already in gear....I just went out and did it just now on my way to A&P....if your too low in the RPM range it doenst happen...2K-3K is prime spot...Pulse the gas and come off then go right back on the gas and its there...almost like a correction you would make while driving...the car pulses then catches up with itself..

Well, I'm sure it's not good to do it in the first place, but I've never experienced jerkiness in the high gears 4th/5th. I'll give it a shot in a couple of hours and report my findings.

Are you coming off/on the gas very quickly? What if you're cruising (foot off the gas) and then you nail the gas...do you feel it then?

it depends on how fast you hit the gas..I really think its a 5spd thing...

I'm pretty sure what you're feeling is referred to as play in the transmission and CV joints. It's the same reason that cars get jumpy when you don't know how to drive a 5-speed. It's perfectly normal.

The engine drags when you let off the gas causing all the play in the tranny to swing one direction, and when you press on it again, you cause the play to swing the other direction and at one point it catches up and feels like it just hit something and you go.

It could also be because gas engines have a slightly delayed throttle response compared to electric vehicles, it takes a few tenths of a second from the time the throttle body opens till power is delivered.

wow...you do 50 in 5th gear. i dont switch to 5th gear until im doing 60 mph

try running at slightly higher rpms in 4th and 5th gears. no bog hear and gas milage is still great.

 

if Im just cruising at a steady speed Im usually in 5th gear at 40mph. Im just used to how the automatics low rpms were so its kind of a habit I guess

 

I just tried it...and I can barely notice a stutter. Not something I'd even think about unless I was specifically looking for it.

 

Fuel cutoff is activated above about 2500-2800 rpm when you let off the gas. If you are driving at that rpm, fuel cutoff can go in and out as you modulate the throttle, making the car drive a little jerky, especially if you have a manual transmission. Maybe this is what you're experiencing?

I would like to override the fuel cutoff so that it never activates, but I haven't figured out a way, yet.

Matt, I'm not sure that you should be cruising at 50mph in 5th with rpms down to 2K....that may be the reason for the hesistation... I also notice with my car that if I cruise down (while in 4th/5th) to say 30-40 and then gas it...the car lags...and takes its time getting up to speed...

 

Exactly, nupe500, why would you be doing 50 in 5th? I think I am just shifting outta third at 50.

Dude, I really think there is something wrong with my car....I went for a ride tonight and tested this little bog bog thing cause it was nice out...

Cruizing in 5th at say 60-65 and give alittle gas...I mean just alittle...my car shutters then accelerates...If your not trying to do it, IT WONT DO IT....Again Its really hard to explain this c*ap...Maybe i should have a shop take it for a ride or Ill go with them feel it...you can actually feel the car shudder..

I don't know if the Maxima ecu is programmed this way, but with some engine management systems, the ecu keeps track of a change in TPS voltage to give some additional fuel. This is done because a sudden opening of the throttle will allow extra air into the engine faster than the O2 sensors can compensate for, resulting in a momentary lean condition. To avoid this, the ecu squirts some extra fuel if it knows the throttle position has changed more than a certain amount. It is completely analogous to the accelerator pump on carbureted engines. So when you pulse the throttle, you're telling the ecu to give it extra gas that it doesn't really need (since you're pulsing and not really keeping the throttle open). This might be what is causing the bogging you're experiencing.

 

also, you might want to check your fuel injector connectors, there is a good chance one or more could be corroeded, causing the hesitation/jerking, happened on my 300ZX, new ones helped quite a bit.

i get the stutter in my car also if i play with the gas while in fifth gear. Doesn';t really concern me too much tho.......

 

I believe I too have experienced this shudder. I thought it was due to the same reason Stephen Max explained above.

I have narrowed it down to:
Plugs
Coils
Where I tapped for my RPM signal is not a good place to tap at the #6 coil top left hand side of the engine ??
a typical 5spd problem

I am getting a very weird hesitaiton at low RPM's that has never been there..its very hard to pinpoint...Its a type of a hesitation you also get when you shift and get into that gear, and the hesitation makes that gear bog bog, before it grabs and goes...with the exhaust its heard better

I have that strange feeling around 2000RPM which sounds about right for 50mph in 5th. It is strange, i wish i knew what it was.

dude, i have this before, too. but it's a little different than yours. i went on and cleaned up the air filter, change fuel filter, and put a bottle of T2 fuel injector cleaner in the gasoline tank. then everything went good. i think it's just clogged up somewhere in the fuel line. go try it out
