The right way to use race gas: 100 Octane

any of you guys using race gas or have some good pointers. I found out the other night my track has 100 octane unleaded. with the upgraded ecu this is going to help me out .

Question: 1 - when is the best time to pour it in ? it would seem that the ecu would not have time to adjust to the new mixture in a few minutes before you start making passes. are you guys mixing it b4 you leave to go to the track ?

it seems that would be the best way. trouble is getting to the track with the right amount of fuel (i like 1/4 tank) and letting the car adjust to get the best performance from it.

anyone know ?

It seems to take me a few passes for my #'s to be where they should. I don't know if it's the race gas or other factors. I guess it would be best to drive for a bit with the race gas mix before making runs, but that is not always or even a possibility. You could get to the track as early as possible and let the car sit and run for a while. I don't know but it only takes a few passes for me, so it's not a huge concern unless the track is so busy I only get a few runs.

I don't think it has anything to do with the ECU adjusting I just don't think the race gas gets mixed in well with the other gas until after you've made a couple runs and sloshed it around in the tank.

I typically buy race gas the night before. Now I'm just going to buy toluene because it's 114 octane and less of it is needed toraise your octane. I bought 1-gallon for $8 and 100 octane race gas is nearly $5. I'm going to buy a 5-gallon can of toluene next time because it works out to be ~$6 a gallon. I get the toluene from the paint store and what I like about it is you know for SURE you're getting 114 octane.

is there any truth to what this guy is saying:

with your stock ignition your car factory recommends 93 octane. if you have made some good mods to the ignition system ( hotter coil, msd box, larger plug wire) and any other mods to the motor you would be fine with 100 octane unleaded. has nothing to do with ecm and what not. you just want your ignition hot enough to be able to burn the extra octane instead of blowing it out of your exhaust.

ceasar it helps immediatley. all the big boy races ive been to dump it in right before a race. i think its main purpose is to keep you from detonating and it keeps the engine from pinging which can retard your engine because of that famous knock sensor. i usually put it in before i get there this way it gets a chance to mix in.
