I was in the junkyard the other day and saw this on a Maxima for the first time. I also saw one on the inside of the bumper off of my old '94 Accord. Did anyone ever figure out what this thing was? It just bugs me not knowing what it is and what it does and why it's in the car.

i think the first 89-91 gxe had the weight bar in the back of the trunk but don't know if the 89-91 se have them,
mine has the cyl like design with mounts and it black and round and with rubbers on it,
i think the first three model on the three gen have them but the last three models of the three gen don't have them,
It's been concluded in many threads that it is a vibration/sound dampener, or perhaps aids with the flex of the frame.
If you think about it the GXE is the luxury model and that would explain why it is only in GXE's, for less vibration and noise as concluded earlier.
By the way before clicking the link I knew that you were talking about the thing in the trunk. So predictable

I guess I was curious because I had a Honda Accord that I had to take the metal front bumper off and there was one inside the bumper. I thought, "where have I heard of something like this before" and then I remembered a few days ago when I was in the trunk of a max. It's got to do something right? I just don't see exactly how it works so it bugs me.
I have had sleepless nights thinking about that thing... But its been years since I have seen one. I'm so glad 4th gens dont have them b/c i remeber that thing gets in the way of trunk space, especialy sub boxes.
