I uploaded some new pics at my cardomain site..so go check it out

http://www.cardomain.com/id/mrt_max93

I also got tired of using that crappy OEM cupholder that Nissan put in, so I came up with my own. I bought a Spill Master Jr. (expanable) at Pep Boys for $6, but I know you can buy it from Walmart for $4. Then I got an "L" bracket and a bag of nuts and bolts from Lowes for around $2-$3. Next, I took the cover off the screw that holds the panel on the center console on the passenger side (see pic). I used that screw to secure the bottom of the L bracket and used the bolt to secure the cupholder through the top. I tightened off the bolt with two nuts so it won't come loose when I'm driving. It turned out really well and it can hold a 32 oz drink and be very stable. Here are a couple of pics for reference...

Looks good. That has been an ongoing problem for our cars and I'd like to do that to mine too. Does it get in the way on the passenger side at all?

What happens if there is a passenger? Looks like it would be in the way?

Drinking in the car? BAH...

Best way...use your hand as a cupholder...least expensive out there...if you need the hand...throw the drink out the window...

Brian

PS...this comes from experience driving to work around noon and having to eat a full bagged lunch on the way (sandwich, chips, fruit, something sweet, and of course a drink~!)

Cupholders are for the lazy ones...

I've used one of those cup holders before on a setup I did. They work really good but be aware that if you don't have something in there while driving it will rattle and drive you nuts. Mine did and I eventually got so annoyed by them that I ripped them right off of the brackets.

This is the setup I used to have:

The cupholder isn't that big and it doesn't get in the way of the passeneger. I've had multiple people seat in that seat and have had no complaints yet.

wanna see mine? let's just say it's in the center console, holds 2 cans comfortably AND closes or holds 2 cups and stays open....and also holds receipts, pens etc...works only for VEs as well as anyone who swaps a VE armrest into a VG...

lophix- what is a ve or vg armrest? Is one tall and the other short? My 94 GXE VG has the tall one-did you just drill some holes or something? Anybody tried a 94-97 VW Passat cupholder, maybe it was on other vws. Sort of cheap cupholder, but seemed to fit on the top of the right side of the console, must have a tab or something to go in a slot or gap in the console. Oval base, with I think circular thin holders that pop up.

the VEs armrest is a lot thicker (or sits highere, whichever way you look at it..) than the VGs....at least my vg had a really thin one and my ve has a thick leather one as pictured. Not sure is that's the same on all vgs/ves. I think any piece of plastic should do the trick, although i used the inner part of the armrest from my VG for it.

hahaha i can relate to that...... but you must have an automatic cuz with a 5 speed its a lost cause. You only get like one french fry in between shifts.

i believe the 92-94's all had the higher armrest and the 89=91's had the sorry excuse for an armrest. don't quote me on that though.

Looks good and functional but I dont like extra stuff sticking out that doesn look like it belongs on the car (just my taste). Thats why I did what others have and put the ford cup holder in mine.

It looks good...sits nice and flush with my Dmask radio and holds cups.

I have sanded the texture off and painted it since I took that pic so it would match the radio and ACC. I can not find my pics of when I did that for some reason...I know they are here somewhere and will post them if I find them.

I've done the same thing in my Max, too. The Ford/Saab cupholder works really well, and looks almost stock. I haven't had a single liquid mishap since I put it in. Prior to installing it, I was almost weekly shopvacing liquid off the floor/seat/lap/shifter etc etc.. If I ever find the Nissan engineer who put that stupid drawer/cupholder in, he's in for an *** kicking...
