Y-Pipe or HS Headers??
Y-Pipe or HS Headers??
I have an 02 6 speed. I have heard Y-pipes don't do much for 5.5gens. Is this really true? I have seen the dyno's for the HS headers and know they are good. There is quite a price difference in these two, but I was originally thinking of getting the y pipe first then the headers a year or so down the line. Now I'm thinking to just go all out right now. Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. Chris.

NOTE: Note that in the
Y-pipe run the torque convertor would not lock up when the wanted and that
is the reason for the low sub-4000 rpm figures on that run. You can
confirm this by looking at the y-pipe + b-pipe run, which did not have the
problem with TC lockup.

If you have the cash go for the headers, but the y-pipe won't disappoint you.

The Y-pipe bolts of to each of the two exhaust manifolds, bringing them together into one pipe which then bolts to the catalytic converter. The stock Y is very restrictive.
Headers replace both exhaust manifolds and the Y is incorporated into the design. If you have headers, you will have no use for a Ypipe since headers take your exhaust all the way to the catalytic converter.

The y-pipe is a section of hte exhaust that attaches to the exhaust manifolds and extends to the catalytic converter. There are two other sections commonly mentioned; the catback and the axle back (or rear section). The catback is exactly what it means the exhaust section from the catalytic converter to the muffler. The axleback or rear section goes from where the b-pipe ends at the axle to the end of the muffler. The b-pipe extends from the catalytic converter to the axel.

2k2whitemaxi - I have a 2-ton jack and put the car on jackstands so I could do the install myself. But I started to round off the bolts on the B side of the cat so I had a shop do it for me. I think I would have been fine if I had some 6-sided wrenches...oh well, live and learn.
Also, the Cattman Y for the 02-03 does not remove any pre-cats and therefore should have impact on emissions testing. The pre-cats on the 02-03s are close coupled up to the block. The 00-01 Cattman Y is not emissions legal (in Viriginia anyways) as it does remove the precats.
