got some good news...and some bad news.

well i got out to the track tonight to put my new trans/clutch/flywheel to the test. i came home with a new personal best. previous best being 13.4 @ 109. i got 4 runs in, ALL ON STREET TIRES...

#1 - 13.230 @ 109.74 ; 2.176 60'
#2 - 13.234 @ 110.30 ; 2.157 60'
#3 - 13.115 @ 110.91 ; 2.112 60'

#4...

60' - 2.096
330 - 5.789
1/8 - 8.688
MPH- 86.17
1/4 - 12.984
MPH- 111.17

wooohoo, broke into the 12's on street tires, but at a dear cost. on the 5th run, i launch normally at my 1800-2000 rpm...let the clutch out and POP. coasted out to about the 1/8 mile. quick check with a million things running though my head...engine idled and revved smoothly, clutch engaged and shifter went in gear...but nothing happened. as the car is coasting it is making a loud cla-clunk as the wheel makes its revolution.

my thoughts are hopefully something with the axle. and *gasp* nothing to do with the tranny itself and the differential.

track was sticking like no ones business. with the new clutch and LSD the car was hooking up like a mad man. 1st gear was gripping very nicely even on street tires. the track could have possibly been over prepped because i was not the only want to get towed off with drivetrain mishaps. a brand new SVT cobra blew the rear out on the launch and another vehicle dropped with a tranny malfunction off the line.

so with the good comes the bad i suppose. luckily i have a truck and dolly capable of pulling my car or else it would have been an expensive ride home. (110 miles each way) this is the only track in my area that still runs wednesday night T&T so i went the extra distance. shame it happened so early in the evening too...i could have made 20 passes if i so desired if my car was mobile. who knows could have maybe gone a wee bit quicker. but oh well i am satisfied is a 12 second pass on street tires none the less.

i think i am still in shock about having to tow my car home. i have never really had anything break like this. i think come tomorrow the good ET's will wear off and i will be upset about having to take my car apart again.

if anyone has any light to shed on my tranny/axle deal i am listening. thanks for reading.

great times, especially on street tires. Sorry to hear about the bad news. It sounds like your axle since you said that you still could shift into gear

That famous POP. Happened to me once while checking out a SC'd max. It takes a lot of force to break an axel, you most likely blew your tranny.

Meh, Turbo95Max has snapped like 3 axles without blowing the tranny. It's perfectly feasible. Hopefully it's that and not a new tranny But big congrats on the time!

I remember riding in Emax's SC'd I30 when we thought he blew the tranny and it turned out to be the clutch. It went into every gear but the car didn't move.

Those are some sick 60' with a SC on streets. That takes some skill. Sucks about the break.....but for a 12 sec pass it's worth it.

Congratulations on breaking into the 12s! I guess it's only fitting that you did it with Mardi's old SC. What size pulley are you running? Z32 or A32 maf? What rpm were you shifting at?

thanks for the replies...

stephen i am running the 3.125, A32 MAF, and shifted every gear at an indicated 7200rpm. so thats more like 6800-6900 actual i am sure. launched at 1800-2000rpm.

wow 12 seconds in the quarter, that's enough force for me. if you said it's sticky out there it's most likely your axle. it's funny i was just having a debate about this, i snapped two of them in two months and nobody believed me. i'm supercharged with nitrous so i recently put on the raxle axles and the lsd. you definitley should get a raxles cause you need them.

i know, no hard feelings i should of explained myself better. but believe me i was happy when it was my axle, i'd rather break five of those than have to replace my tranny.

Does the car move, or does it just rev up? If it doesn't move but engages into gear smoothly you blew the drive axle. If it moves, but makes noise, sounds bad and gets scary around 40mph you blew the passenger side axle. I've done both, and I can almost guarranty it's an axle and not the tranny.

By the way, raxle axles are garbage re-manned crap that is way over priced. I went through 2 passenger side axles through them.. don't waste the money.

Good luck with your car, Napa axles are like $40 and have lasted longer than my raxle axles did. Plus you can replace Napa's at $40 a pop instead of $150.

correction, raxles are not remanufactured, they use brand new joints with amsoil synthetic grease. They do not claim to be higher performance axles, just higher quality. They will make high performance axles for a price.

just for the record both axles are from Raxles. put them in 2 weeks ago.

the car does NOT move in any gear. everything egages perfectly normal. just doesnt go anywhere when the clutch is released.

UNCDooD: However, with the LSD on his car, it will still move. The power is constantly engaged on both axles/wheels, so even if one axle is broken, the other axle will still turn, and the car will move.

This happened to me once. My clutch disk fully tore apart, permanently engaging the clutch. I could start and rev the engine just fine, and put it into gear, but in any gear, the car would NOT move, it would just rev up.

i dunno about that. my car has an LSD tranny. when i broke my driverside axle my car would now move. maybe I was just burning my clutch up since it had been slipping a little bit before that track visit.

I've had this happen to me before with another vehicle of mine. If your saying that when you put it in gear & let out on the clutch pedal & the car doesn't move at all then more then likely you have broken your clutch. When I replaced my clutch it had several fractures from the pucks to the springs. My guess is it's your clutch disc...

alright, well i just got around to getting it jacked up and getting under there to take a peek since i was out of town all weekend...

the verdict is a snapped axle. and by snapped i mean SNAPPED. broken at the shaft and not any of the joints. i talked to marty at raxles and he said he hasnt seen any break at the shaft.

i am a happy camper. shouldnt be any damage to the clutch or any internal parts of the tranny. the axles are easy as pie to change and the replacements are free. he is sending out a new one tomorrow and i should have the car back in business by the weekend. i took a shot of the axle...i am miffed as to how this happened...

i am going to get the same one sent out and worry about getting a beefed up one if the problem arises again.

Good job requin!! I'm currently dealing with a broken axle as well... Not sure of where it's broken at yet but I assume at one of the joints... What kind of LSD do you have BTW?? Those 60' times are unbelievable. Once again nice times, and good job on the axle. :P

I'm just curious to see what, if any difference, slicks/drag radials would make.
Can't wait to see what times you post this week.
