I love my '91 max, but is anyone else annoyed by the long clutch throw of this car?? I can see where a short throw shift kit will be a huge advantage. Is my clutch adjusted wrong? or is it just that way. It seems that I have to move my leg farther than say in your average mid '80's American standard trans pick-up!
I find it hard to find that engagement point where you can cheat a bit to quicken your shifting action. any suggestions?

 

what clutch is in there? If you've got the factory clutch, they use a pretty springy marcel and pressure plate, so they don't cooperate well when you're trying to shift quickly.. you might want to bleed your clutch hydraulic lines. Aftermarket clutches like the ACT and Exedy are both designed with stiffer parts to allow quicker shifting.

FYI, a short throw shifter is for the shifter itself- not the clutch. completely opposite end of the transmission.

 

the clutch has been replaced about 20-30k ago, actual mileage not sure, 169k indicated. I believe it to be a stock replacement. my concern is the actual travel of the clutch lever is about twice the distance of for example a '98 neon that I recently drove.

I did know that the short throw was for the shifter it self. two additional ? come to mind. one, how much shorter, or how much quicker is the shifting with such a kit? (distance in half)? Last ?, maybe a dumb one, has any one ever tried shorting the shift lever? wouldn't that "quicken up the throw of the trans? or, would it make it harder to shift as there wouldn't be as much leverage to complete the shift?

as I now understand it short throw kits have more to do with the linkage to the transmission rather than I have niavely stated above.
