Forward O2 sensors

Anyone have problems with their forward (are there 2?) O2 sensors, but not have the Check Engine light come on? I recently saw a posting on Max mailing list that said that one possible cause for hesitation while accelerating could be the forward O2's.
I work with a guy who has a 99 Max (same as mine) only his is a 5-speed. He has been back to the dealer THREE times for them to replace his front 2 O2 sensors (CA-emissions) but each time his check engine light came on. The dealer told him that this is a "common problem" with Maximas (although his case was the first I heard of it). I think the dealer is stumped and is giving a BS answer though.
Ironically, I haven't had any problems at all, and I have a totally aftermarket exhaust, including the Y-Pipe which removed a pre-cat. You would think that if anyone would have a problem it would have been me. Go figure.
