Best shifting points for performance& Power options

Hello,

Last year in December I bought a 97 Maxima. I love this car. It's quicker than the 85 Monte Carlo SS I got rid of in 2002.

Anyway, I was wondering what the best shift points/rpm are to get the best quarter mile times and what is the best rpm to launch at on street tires?

Thanks.

P.S. I installed a K&N filter and was wondering what inexpensive modifications could I do to gain more power?

There's a sticky in the 1/4 mile forum on shift points.

Here's what is said to be the optimum shift points.

GEAR/OPTIMUM SHIFT POINT/SPEED
1 / 6440 rpm / 32 mph
2 / 6200 rpm / 62 mph
3 / 5940 rpm / 87 mph
4 / 5600 rpm / 110 mph

For some reason, I get better times when I redline each gear, despite my dyno telling me I'm losing power after 5600 RPM's.

Thanks for your reply. Did you get a muffler that is 2.5'' in and out? Also, are you using a stock catalytic converter or is there an aftermarket freeflowing 2.5" cat?

What did you ask for exactly from the muffler shop regarding the 2.5" custom exhaust?

I aksed 2 performance shops here in Ottawa if they sold Y pipes for my 97 maxima and they said they don't have them. I saw them on the internet. The URL for Budgetexhaust.com isn't working anymore. Do you know where I could get one? I'm in Canada.

I have a 5 speed.

Thanks...and cool photo.

Even tho you lose power after 5600 you its still not the best time to shift. If you shift that early, around 5600, you'll enter the next gear at like 5000, where you'll be making ~140 or so fwhp, as opposed to ~170. Therefore its better to go over the power peak so that when you'll shift into the next gear you'll be at your max. power. I've heard from someone who did the calculations, with respect to the gear ratios that the optimun 1-2 shift is 6650 (so redline for us non-JWT users) 2-3 is ~6400 and 3-4 is ~6250.

I take it there are different Budget Exhaust locations in Ontario, they aren't in BC. I don't know anything about a US$50 Y-pipe. Everything I've seen is much higher than that. People on the sites I am on tell me the Budget Y-pipe is pretty good and they in fact import them into the US from Ontario.

Try (905) 681-4579 or (800) 256 - 4482 or e-mail mufflers@allstream.net. Those are for the Budget Exhaust in Burlington, Ontario. Maybe they have a location closer to you. I'm strongly considering ordering the Y-pipe through them. Its stainless steel and is C$250 plus C$15 for the installation kit which includes gaskets.

I thought I read somewhere that an aftermarket Y-pipe can actually improve fuel economy? Is that right? If so, any ideas by how much?
