Custom built race exhuast vs Creddy EVO 2

Guys i need some opinions... This guys who has been in the exhaust business for over 25 years.Guys at my barber shop rave and rant about this guy and have let him do there exhaust, one guys has a BMW 540, and and another a Mustang GT with fairly significant mods, they are both satisfied and pleased with there perfromance and sound. They told me to check him out so i did. He builds race exhuast for drag, street, track, off -road racing etc. The guy knows his stuff! He will build you a exhuast according to what mods you have or not have on your car. I showed him my Injen and told him the +/- 's of it. I told him i loss some low end but i have good mid to high end power and i was looking for a exhaust that will give me good power throughout the rev band. He instantly said that i need a plus 1.25"-1.5" upgrade in piping. He said anything bigger i will be creating a top end car and i will lose alot of low end.

I told him i was going to buy a Greddy cat-back exhaust for $475, he said he could build me a better exhaust for $210, aluminum piping and any high flow exhaust i wanted. He said Greddy is good , but they build exhaust systems for the masses and really don't pay attention to make a exhaust system for "your" car only.

The guy told me free upgrades to his exhaust system to any modifications that i do to my engine . He believes in his work and backs it up too. He lets you drive your car for a week then he wants you to comeback for any tweeks or adjustments. He said Greddy will give me about 5-8WHP , he said he will get me 10-12WHP.

$475 for the name of Greddy or $210 for a custom race exhaust? What do you guys think?

Thats the thing , he said if its to loud for my taste he will throw a performance resonator on there to quite the exhaust down. I was also thinking stainless vs aluminum. Stainless won't rust but aluminum is lighter than stainless steel. He suggested throwing a Ractive muffler on there, 8lbs it weighst that is light for a muffler. I keep saying to myself its only $210 , hell i paid $225 for my Injen so how bad could it be! Or do i fgo or name brand and bragging rights of owning a Greddy.....hate deciding.

What if you don't like it? He's not going to refund your $225 is he? Then you will be thinking that you should just have spent that money towards Greddy.

IMO, not worth it if your car is NA and you don't drag race all the time. Noise will be my main concern.

Very true.... but he says he will build it the way you like it. I told him i want more of a pro-street setup, where i will have power throughout the rev band. He said he could build it for me with ease....

It's not going to be aluminum. Aluminized steel tubing. It doesn't really matter how much experience this guy has. Exhaust mods on a na car will only give you so much. Best thing to do is probably have the guy copy the Greddy system

Your right it is Aluminized steel tubing.Yeah i know i will get only so much from a custom or any exhaust for that matter. I think i am going to go custom.

I'll let you guys know the second week in June what i think of it. Then its off to the dyno.

This guy sounds like he makes good exhaust setups, yet why do you expect so much out of an exhaust system? Does he make headers also? Just the catback isn't going to make much of a difference, other then the sound.

I just got a cattman setup, and i'm loving it. Ask him to make you a setup like that, or just get the real thing.

I think the greddy looks ricey, not my style.

my .02 cents

10-12whp with just a cat-back? that's a lot for NA maxima.

usually 10-12whp is what I have seen for SC'ed maximas.

I had a 2.5" mandrell bent exhaust with Magnaflow resonator- 22" long 7" round canister, with a Ractive dual 3.5" tip rear muffler. It was louder than my Greddy. I hated it cause it was falln apart after bout a year. So if this guy tells ya U need a +1"-1.5" exhaust- does he mean U need like a 3" or 3.5" exhaust since the stocker is like ALMOST 2" ? Don't sound right for a NA engine. Most people who I asked to make me my custom exhaust told me its going to throw on a check engine light, or I will loose backpressure and throw a code.... well ya know I'm a mechanic, U aint going to tell me fairy tales. Buy a Greddy, Cattman, or Frankencar, or the new JIC MAGIC, atleast its designed to fit right, won't bang all over the place....

I don't know, my exhaust is custom. I got a megan racing tip with a high flow cat. No resenator nor silencer and it sounds deep like a greddy. This is the same guy that built a custom dual exhaust for my CRX. Oh yeah....my engine light did not come on nor did I have any problems with the pipe's. Good luck on your set up
