Since my tranny is about toast, I bought a VLSD tranny to swap it out with, the shop is claiming 10.5 hours to swap trannies. How long is it really supposed to take?

 

this is way off topic but where did u get ur vlsd tranny from and how much did it cost u?

 

If the seals and everything else is good then 11 hours seems right. I just had my tranny swapped out and the guy called me around 3:30 pm and he begun at around 8:30. That's nine hours. It only costed me $400 to get the tranny swapped.

Yea right, I can pull a tranny off the car in 2hrs flat and then have it back up in another 2hrs. 4hrs flat out I can have the car in my garage and back out.

Shiet.... Jay25 can do that probably quicker, Ramius83 can also do it probably quicker......

11 hours?!?!?! I can swap it myself in less than three. Where are the other eight coming into play?

 

Did a complete clutch job on iansw car in about 6 hours, r&r clutch and tranny. Not counting running around for parts, doing other prep work....that's just pure labor.

I think he means from auto to manual.....

It can't only take 3 hours and make everything run.......

 

From auto to 5 speed.....if you were really good, maybe a day, if you weren't so good...maybe 3 weeks?

if its your first time, and you take your time you should be in the 8-10 hour range. for the guys who have dropped the tranny before 4-6 hours is not out of the question.

if you are going to put in the tranny and its your first time, i would suggest really taking your time and getting it in without rushing.

I am putting a 5spd in, in place of my existing 5spd.

I got the manual tranny with CVs for $950. They found my tranny from another salvage shop and had it shipped in. There was an automatic out of an I30 in stock for $750

If somebody can do the swap in under 11 hours, he must be doing it everyday for a living. The actual tranny swap can be done in much less than 11, but then you have to drill the firewall, mount the clutch pedal and master cylinder, install a flywheel and clutch, remove the auto shifter and install the manual shift linkage, bleed the system, etc... It took me about 24 hours to do all that.

This past weekend I removed Kenneth's auto tranny and replaced it with another, it took me about 10 hours working at a leisurely pace including a run down to the parts store and a beer break. But I had to swap the VB, too, which took some time.

 

a shop with a lift should be able to replace a 5spd with another 5spd in about 3-4 hours to be on the safe side. 11 hours is rediculous

 

The pricing should be no different than a clutch job. I would definitely NOT go to this place if I were you. Quoting 11 hour is really an attempt to pull a fast one on you.

 

They say the books says 10.5 hours and it is rarely wrong. I called and they have it all torn apart today already. I had them check my breaks too, because they are squealing when coming to a stop. Another shop told me, oh its just from going from winter to spring that they're doing that. You still have 10,000 to 15,000 miles left on them. Well the other shop was wrong, all four brakes are shot too. Plus I have to replace the O2 sensor and knock sensor also. Everything seems to be going bad at once.

 

they are ripping you off straight up. the book says about 4 hours for a clutch replacement, and and a tranny swap-out is the same amount of labor.

 

 

I dropped the motor and tranny out of a spec-v today in 2 hours.

 

we did my tranny swap in about 12 hours . That included spending several hours ****ed off trying to get the hydraulic lines fixed. It was my first time but Jay25 had done it before.
