plexiglass or even a thin piece of sheetmetal will work fine.. all you wanna do is cover up the hole.
but as was said, it doesn't to anything worthwhile.. the only difference you get is the engine is MUCH louder below 3500rpm.

these teachers dont "no" what they are doing to me with all this work! ;p
you guys are forgetting that the intake tube on our cars never gets hot enough to worry about that. it's made from ABS plastic, which will melt and fall apart sooner than PVC will even go past it's rated temperatures. Most PVC is rated to 250F.. that part of our engines probably never gets above 150-160, and on really bad days might get to 200. it's nothing to worry about.
so? the stock intake pipe is not pvc (like you said, abs plastic, which is very heat resistent). you say nothing to worry about? it may not get that hot but you really never know, why use pvc when you know its proven to be not realiable cars, people dont ***** about pvc for no reason. stick to a material that you know will stand the test of time and heat.
93 SE..
The dude at the Brooklyn meet this weekend with the Black 93 SE had a custom Cold Air Intake made out of, if I am not mistaken PVC tubes? Not sure, his Max.org ID is JibaroMax... He said it worked pretty well but he didn't reccomend doing that.
