I know the SR20det is a very tempting motor, but the only time you should ever consider this is if you have a 240. There is no reason to want to do that to your max. The Max has more potential and for the cost and hassle of replacing the vq for the sr, your vq could be decimating all!

I've even seen an SR20DET installed in a RX-7 in "Modified Mag march 04 issue" Run's mid 10's in the 1/4. 10.67 to be exact & still has alittle more tunning to go before optimal performance is complete. Should be able to get low 10's easy?

SR20 is a RWD motor -- for a RWD car...240SX

VQ30 is a transverse v6 for FWD!!!!!!

Actually there are FWD versions of the SR20DET. Also, older sentra se-r's had a non turbo version (the sr20de). The FWD sr20det was found in the bluebird (j-spec altima) and the pulsar gti, amongst others. This could probably be done with enough money, but like toofast said, its not worth it. The motor puts out 205 hp at 7 psi stock. Not too much of a bump over the max. You would spend less time and money going forced induction on your VQ and come out with a lot more hp and torque in the end.

It still aint worth it, why would you want a 2.0L 4 cyl turbo in a 3300lb car?

Slap a pfi or ssr turbo on a 3.0L v6.............

How many proven 500 hp Vq's are there. How many SR20's are there.

Still, its pointless. Any idea on how sh!tty the car will drive when you're crusing around in the city? 4 banger powering a big sedan like ours would suck. VQ brings out more tq. It'd be cheaper to supercharge or turbocharge the existing VQ.

How many built VQ's are there? How many built SR20's are out there?

Hal put down damn near 500 WHP on stock internals. And even then, the bottleneck was the stock compression ratio and ignition timing. If it was built and tuned like those crazy SR's..........

sr20's rock but i wouldnt do it in a max. best sr20 swap ive seen was in a 99 style infiniti g20 and from what i saw that car moved. i plan on getting a 240sx and want to do the sr20 swap. for the price for the engine, tranny, possibly the ecu, the cv axles, custom motor mounts and the price of the install you can easily have a nice vq with a turbo charger, ecu upgrade, a nice clutch for the tranny (if applicable) and some other engine parts for alot less.

One thing I don't know if anyone noticed, even though this is the 4th gen forum, the guy asking the question has an 87, so he doesn't have a VQ30, he has a VG30. Also, as a 2nd gen, I think he's only like 2900-3000 lbs, not positive on the weight though.

Not saying that it's a wonderful idea or anything, I don't know a whole lot about the older maximas or how feasable the swap would be, just a little food for thought.

Hey! You're right! I didn't notice that! Well in that case it could be a good idea to swap in an SR20DET. Not sure though.
But if it were a 4th gen max, it would definitely not be a good idea and would be a lot better to convert from a VQ30DE to a VQ30DET

i think the cost to replace the vq30de for a det is way to much compared to installing a turbo kit to and vq30de plus you get new parts with warranty

Actually in Japan. One of the race teams used the 3SGTE turbo in a Supra.

In the US, the JTC teams used to use that motor for racing. But I guess they went to the V8 now.

So while unusal, it's not unheard of. Plus in other countries I believe the "maxima" also came with 2.0 liter turbo engine or the very small RB20DET?

There sure are a lot of retards in the 4th gen forum. As the prices fall, I guess more kids can afford them. Talking down turbo 4's thinking your v6 is badass. Don't be a moron. There are tons of turbo 4's that will smoke the hell out of any maxima out there. There are plenty of turbo 4's that have a 1/4 mile time lower than the 1/8 time of the maxima. Don't kid yourself, ALL non turbo, small displacement v6 are slow. All of them, yours included, have limited potential. And I don't want to hear any childish crap about how hlh's car has 560 hp, or there's a low 12 sec maxima out there. Yeah, they did a great job and I'm not disrespecting thier accomplishments in any way. It's a real feat. But the losers touting that as validation for maximas being fast or having lots of potential need to get a clue. I can show you a video of a 10 second silverado, stock internals too. Does that mean the silverado is the king of performance? I can find super fast cars with dodge caravans, old station wagons, and pretty much any other beat up pos out there. ANY kind of car which is modded by anybody has a couple rareties that stand out. It doesn't mean anything with the typicals of that car.

The Sr would be a big step up from a VQ. The maxima has a high compression ratio, weak bottom end, a tiny aftermarket, all of which adds up to NOT being the best choice for boost.

Even with the ls1 guys, they'll have the common sense to acknowledge turbo 4s for potential and ability. And that engine makes nearly twice the power of the VQ30de. Anybody who sits here in a freaking 14-16 second car talking about a turbo 4 having no torque is a moron. Torque and power come from the amount of fuel being burned. Turbos increase torque just like they increase hp.

Also, 3300 lbs is EASILY handled by a turbo 4. STI, EVO, DSMs, all run on turbo 4s and weigh that much and more.

Your retarded. How many I-4's can handle 450-500 whp on stock internals. I can only think of one with is the SRT-4 engine. That whole car was over enginered anyway. And you talking crap about the VQ. The VQ crank will never have to be replaced. Even though the VQ rods and pistons are kind of weak because this car was never designed to be a sports car. But Nissan uses the VQ in almost every car in their line-up. They use the VQ instead of the stout RB in Japanese Racing. It will also be in the new skyline, their super car. Their is nothing wrong with high compression, the fastest 350z uses high compression. 11:1:1 compression and 9 lbs of boost. The VQ30DET is known in Australia to hold 600 whp with stock internals. So shut your mouth. Just because people don't grag race a Maximas which is a grochery getter, doesn't mean that it has pontential. Theres only a few people on the board who even tried to spend the time and money to release the potential of ours Maximas. And turbo I4's don't have **** on a Turbo V6.
