Window one-touch up Switch Reset '02-'03
Window one-touch up Switch Reset '02-'03
With the help of the technical service manual on CD produced by Nissan on the 2002 and 2003 Maxima I now have located the quick fix for a problem I have had since purchasing my used 2002 SE a few months ago. That is the drivers door window one-touch up function for the window was not working properly. The window would go up to the top and then retreat about 5 inches back down again. This problem is due to the limit switch needing to be reset which at first I thought would be a considerable job (to take off the door panel etc.) but ended up being literally a 2 minute job as the door panel can remain in place. My dealer wanted $85 CDN for the switch reset which I knew was a rip off before I found the fix procedure myself. I know several '02 and '03 Maxima owners have had this same problem as I saw earlier threads referencing it but no-one then appeared to know the fix. Alhough this procedure is simple once you do it, my description seems long as I wanted to be a descriptive as possible since I can't provide pictures. So here it is:
Step 1: Pry the plastic cap up off the bottom centre of the door pull handle and remove the single philips screw.
Step 2: Remove the whole switch panel (in which the door pull handle sits) by prying it up from the back end either with a flat edged screwdriver or table knife (under cloth) or by hand which is what I did. It is just clipped in so should come out relatively easily sliding it up at the back and then pulling it back.
You can now see the inside of the door from where the switch finishing plate sat. You can leave the wiring all attached and simply hang the switch and handle plastic assembly to one side so you can see the inside of the door.
Look inside towards the front bottom of the door behind the plastic vapour barrier you will see a small black switch. It almost looks like a black pan screw head. This is the reset switch but there is a sequence to now doing the actual reset procedure. The switch doesn't really feel like one when you press it through the plastic liner which incidentally you don't need to cut (at least I didn't have to). It is a switch that is only on when you are pressing it otherwise when released it is off.
STEP 3: Make sure the window is closed (up) completely. Turn the ignition on so the windows are receiving power.
a) Press the reset switch (and keep it pressed in) and open (down) the window completely (manually -NOT with AUTO ONE TOUCH DOWN FUNCTION).
b) Release the reset switch. Then close the window completely (manually only - NOT AUTO UP).
c) The limit switch is now reset. Easy!!!
This procedure worked for me straight away as I hope it will for you should you have this annoying problem. The Nissan manual does caution you not to use the one touch UP-DOWN function during this procedure so be warned.
$85 for a 2 minute job = $2,550 hour! Good going Nissan. I am in the wrong line of work!!!

question........my passenger side window is the one that has this symptom, by using the main driverside controls. i haven't tried the passenger side control to see if it does it there too. but my question is, the reset switch, is it on the driver side or passenger side that i need to reset?
thanks,

Bumping this 7-year old thread with some gratitude.
4 years ago, my passenger window was bouncing off the top with that 4" safety bump. I took it to the dealership, and they charged me $50 for a quick fix.
2 years ago, my passenger window again started bouncing. This time I researched the solution here on the Org, and reset the window myself. It was my first introduction to Maxima.org. I've been here ever since.
A few weeks ago, the window started bouncing again, so I dug up this thread, and reset the window. No more mystery bounce.
Thanks again, OP. This was good info, and I'm glad it was here to be found.

2000 Nissan maxima reset switch
My husband took the door panel off and we looked and looked for this reset switch and can not find it anywhere. I will tell you what our problem is and maybe you can help. We had the issue where the window rolls up and then comes 3/4 of the way back down. Well yesterday I went the the drive thru and the window went down and will not go back up . We hear no noise when we press the switch can someone tell me if it is the motor or the switch or how to tell which one it is. Thanks.

I'm going to try the reset in the morning!
i do not see any buttons on my 03 max. i took the inner panel off, and removed the plastic. i still cant find anything. the only thing i did find was a piece of rubber that looked like a button, but after removing it, there was nothing underneath.
You don't need to remove the inner plastic lining; just hold the plunger switch down through the plastic during the reset process.
And certainly you don't need to bump 3 identical threads for this. C'mon... seriously?
You don't need to remove the panel; just the recessed armrest cover.

It's a very small plunger switch, and I can see why it would be misconstrued as something other than it is.
But if you say you don't have it, then I suppose we'll just have to take your word for that. However, the only reason why a 2003 Maxima would *not* have a reset switch in both front doors is because someone took your doors apart and removed it. Or replaced/repaired the doors and didn't bother with the reset switch.
Have you looked for it on the other door? Find it there perhaps, and that will give you the context to find it on the other side.

Maybe silly question, but will this work in the 01 5th gen's? All this reading seems to be specifically for the 02-03 5.5 gen's, but the door panels should be nearly if not completely identical, eh? My driver window is doing this as well.
IDK. Sounds like your best bet is to suck up the service charges and see your local dealership.
Removing the door panel isn't that hard... give it a try or ask a buddy. The switch is hard"ish" to find at first b/c it doesn't really feel like you're pushing down the right thing.

this little black nipple looking thing towards the bottom is it...

another view.... find the "2", go down, behind the plug...

thats exactly what i had found. on the pass side, its nothing but a piece of rubber. no switch under it. i dont know about the driver side tho, the nipple is there but i did not have the drivers side panel removed to see. started raining hard here so i had to close it all up.
any idea on the wiring of that switch?

YAY! Not trying to revive a year old thread, but thank you! Tried it last night and worked flawlessly. It was almost impossible to see the switch for me, but if you simply cut the plastic another 5-6" to the right from where it has already been cut, you can actually see the "nipple" no problem. Make sure you have it pressed all the way in otherwise it won't work.

And years later here on the Org, so am I, it seems.
It's been a while since I've been here on the forums, but I came yesterday to search for a different issue when I stumbled onto this fix. Very quick and easy! Very grateful to the OP and those who chipped in with comments. My window works properly again! Thanks!

Anyone have any idea how to deal with this?
I did but that didn't work.
I left it alone overnight and tried again just now. It had gone back to the original problem state but when I ran the procedure again... it worked!
No need to buy a new car... for now. ha.
