random shifting problems

Hi I have a 92 maxima (automatic) and when your first taking off the car will be real sluggish and slow to change out like it has no power, the rpm hand will move slowly and kinda jump. It only seems to do it when your stopped and start to go and then when changing from 1st to 2nd. Other times the rpm hand will go all the way to 5 before finally switching gears. I've also had problems recently where when I stop at a stop sign or red light and take my foot off the break and start to press the gas the car will go dead but it will start right back. These problems do not occur all the time but pretty often. Its very frusturating and if anyone hase any suggestions on what it is or what to do to fix it I would aprreciate it

Hmm, I'm not sure. But it sounds to me that your tranny is slipping. You said when it is about to shift into 2nd gear, the motor will rev up to 5K? Does the motor actually rev to 5K.. or does the needle just move that high? Most likely, you have a slipping tranny, which is NOT good. Get ready for your tranny to die!

BTW, how many miles are on your car? Do you know if it's the original tranny or has it been rebuilt before?

I really dont think its the transmission because it doesnt do it all the time. I can drive it for about 5 miles before it will start acting sluggish when you take off and what i mean by that is that you can have the accelerator all the way to the floor and it just shifts real slow, and what I meant about going to 5 on the rpms is that it'll wait til around 5 to shift into 2nd and 3rd gears. But like I said the first few miles that you drive it you cant tell anything is wrong with it.

first thing i do now when car runs funny is get gas at a diff station (with these prices theres bound to be some idiot selling watered gas etc.)does it rev smooth when in park or nutruel ?this kinda sounds like the prob i had for a while i thought it was trans until i noticed it wasnt reving smooth in park or n. either so when i was driving it was hesitateing and rpms were kinda doing that like yours im not sure which of the things i did that fixed it but i...swapped back to stock intake box(i think the cone filter soo close to the maf sensor was too much flow for the maf needle??)(or the bracket wasnt holding it well) and replaced a clamp on intake tube that would get tite then slip(air intake leak) been ridin like new since 92 gxe white w\vg power ...good luck

Well yesterday I cleaned the trottle body and changed my gas filter and it ran better than it has in a long time until late last night when i took my girlfriend home it started doin the same ol shiat agian. I stopped at a stop sign and it about went dead and it started doing the same shifting problems again too.
I think today Im going to put new plugs and plug wires on it.

Ok, I'm sorry. I thought you did a little reading before asking that question. Do a tune up 1st!!! THEN try to diagnose problems.

Plus, you won't find plug wires on our motor.

Well today I figured out that our motor doesnt have plug wires. I changed the spark plugs and on one of the igniton boots or whatever that you call those things that go on top of the spark plugs I found a crack. Do you think that crack could be causing my troubles.

You mean the "coil pack" that physically connects to the spark plug? It has 2 10mm bolts holding it down. Those things are known to go bad.

But I am still unsure of what your problem is. What is your AT switch set to? That little switch below the ashtray. Put it in the middle and be happy. But, that wouldn't make it shift at 5K at very little throttle.

Which brings the throttle position sensor to mind. That DOES effect shifts on the automatic tranny. The throttle position sensor (TPS) is connected to the throttle body. It's that little black box with a harness connector coming off of it. There are ways to test all your sensors, but you will need a factory service manual (FSM). You can get them cheap on ebay sometimes.
