1985 wagon transmission slip into 3rd gear..
The other day, I noticed that when the car shifts to 3rd gear, i hear a skid//skip in my tires (( the sound you would hear if you had a manual and let the clutch out with about 4-5k reving)). If i accel fast, the car will not shift to 3rd gear, it just revs all the way to 5k+ and i have to let off the gas, and wait for it to hit around 2k and then it will jerk (sometimes not too noticable) into 3rd gear. If i manualy shift from 1st to 2nd, it is great, but when i knock into drive, it will not hit 3rd gear. I have to let off the gas and wait for it to hit 1500-2000k for it to hit 3rd, then i can switch my OD on and it will go into 4th with ease.
I dont normaly drive the car hard, but these cars have the performance, so it's difficult to not fly around sometimes
I am just wondering if I should change the ATF since the car has about 167k on it, and im not sure when it was last changed. OR if i should try and get a new ECU .. I would like to upgrade the ECU for better performance, and would also like to know the compatable 300z ECU's that would connect right in..
thanks for all the help

Well, back when my original 5-speed begun to fail, I priced out a rebuild for it. Why don't I just say that it'd be about $2-3k for the rebuild. I ended up finding a used 3rd gen 5-speed. The cost of that, plus clutch job and install...about $900-1k.

se86>> i will deffinatly check that tomorrow, that is what i was thinking anyway..
arsonist>> if you want to go se86's way (which would be the cheapest) check out www.cherry-auto.com .. they have a HUGE supply of parts, and i bought a 1989 accord engine and transmission, both with less than 90k on them back a year ago and the total INCLUDING shipment was 906$ then i found a local shop that did the swap for 300$ .. you really cant beat that .. also found a fender for my friends 95 mx-6 for 125$ shipped
