0302 EGR Check Engine Light

My check engine light came on a with the rear O2 sensor and EGR trouble codes. The O2 sensor was replaced as well as the EGR was serviced. As i took it home all the lights were off. But after about 20 to 30 miles just the EGR came back on. I had to get it inspected and it passed emissions testing with the CEL on. So I was just wondering if i need to reset my computer? or If something is still wrong with my EGR and if so how could I take a look at it. The mechanic I brought it to was a mechanic from a used car dealership b.c i had a warranty with the car...now that it is inspected the warranty is no more....sorry for the long post, but any suggestions for what i can try to do to get the CEL light away. Thanks and happy driving!!!

Yeah, The diagrams should help Big D. Thanks alot. I guess I can use the diagrams from big D to actually identify the different parts. And test them with an Ohm meter. But before I do that Should i try and reset my computer and see if that helps? All i do is keep turning that ECM screw back and forth like 3 times with the ignition on right (i didnt understand the writeup on reseting comp) What if i just disconnect the battery wont that be another way to do it?

It's a good idea to try to get the hoses and pipes off and try to clean the inside of them. Never know how much shiznit is stuck in there.

This right-up is pretty straight-forward, with pics too:

Yeah after some searching I found some great threads on the ORG about cleaning the pipes with TB Cleaner. White96MaxSE did a great job detailing his EGR cleaning. I figure with your diagrams Big D. and some TB cleaner I can just got nuts cleaning it all. I dont think the home mechanic can accidently do a lot of damage with the task...and hell it will save me $$$$$

I had ongoing EGR problems (0302)..This is what I had to go through..inspected EGR valve itself..Valve was in good working order..Did BG 44k induction cleaning..Code went away for 3 days and came back again...Finally I replaced EGR solenoid valve..Code finally went away, hasn't come back for more than a month now ..Good luck...! I know this code is very frustrating.

I've had two codes (03-02 & 10-5) come up relating to EGR and from my experience the EGR valve itself is not the usual culprit. Although you can do a visual check to see if its working by watching its diaphram move up and down as you rev up the engine by pulling on the accelerator cable. You can also try cleaning or replacing some of the vacuum hoses, I did that on mine. Finally, the real culprit turned out to be the EGRC Solenoid valve (code 10-5). Read this thread for more details.

I didn't have the convenience of all the diagrams that BigD has generously contributed, wish I did. Took me months to resolve the issue since I didn't have a lot of time to look for the components let alone troubleshoot them. But I finally resolved my EGR issues, plus I had no problems passing the smog test. Prior to that, I did. So keep in mind that this problem, if neglected, can fail you during smog testing.
