clunky feel to 5-speed manual

My once precision sharp ( click -click) 5 - speed manual on my 92' SE has recently become clunky and at times down right difficult to get in gear. Is this a clutch issue or a gearbox prob? Would draining and refilling the gearbox help? Any help would be appreciated. Car has 86 K miles. Thankyou

welcome

Could be gearbox/linkage related, but it'd probably help if you drained and refilled the tranny with Redline fluid (MT-90). You'll need 5 bottles of it. You can get it from myoilshop.com, many other websites or might be able to find some locally at performance auto shops around there.

There is a drain bolt on the underside of the tranny and then fill it at the 1/2" square drive plug bolt on the front side of the tranny. Fill it up to the level where it is even with that fill hole.

I'd check the hydraulic clutch master cylinder, clutch line and slave cylinder for leaks. Rebleed the clutch system and see if tha improves anything.

If you confirm that the clutch line is working right, check the outputshaft for seals and then consider chaning the fluid to a quality synthetic.

i kind of had (still have aittle) the same problem... when im at a stop light its hard to shift into 1st gear, and sometimes its just not crisp. what helped alittle was actually taking a very little amount of oil out of the tranny, i just had too much. but since the issue is still happening somtimes (not nearly as bad) i think im gunna drain the tranny one of these days. also what does a bottle of that oil cost (the stuff you recommended)

Thanks
Steve

um what made you think there was to much oil in the tranny because you cant really over fill it. the oil is soposed to be as high as the fill plug on the front and if any lower could cause your bearings to die quickly and make it hard to shift

also definitly check all the bushings in the linkage

could also be a broken tranny mount

i didnt know it was too full, i actually thought it was too low. and i had about 1/2 quart of gear oil left, so i was gunna put that in. when i took the fill plug off about 2-3 oz of oil came out, so i was gunna go and get more oil and do a full drain, but it was running the best it ever had

just one more thing to add - make sure the car is on a level surface when you add the tranny fluid
if the front or back of the car is jacked up, it will give you the incorrect level
