I changed my brake pads today, due to horrible squealing and dusting. when i got to the pass side brakes, the inner brake pad was still alright, but the outer one had basically no material left on it at all, maybe a mm or so. What could cause this. I just put on some raybestos QS and don't want to screw em up.

 

When you change your brakes, do you do anything else? When you goto a shop and pay $100+ to change front pads, they're supposed to turn your rotors, grease your pins, and change your caliper seals. I'm guessing your caliper seal needs to be replaced and clean/grease your pins.

I know that if you over grease the pins, it can cause your calipers to stick. Go to www.motorvate.ca , he explains this and a lot of good and useful stuff on his site.

 

My99maxisnice: changing the seals is more than I've ever done... that's why I let my dad do it. If you want, you can goto your local autopart store and request a "caliper rebuild kit". I think it'll have the seals you need. And if you can, bring your caliper w/u and ask them how to do it. The best I can do for u is post a scan of the fsm parts schematic.

There is no need to change the caliper seal unless it is leaking.

Typically uneven brake pad wear is caused if the slider(s) seize or the pad itself seizes in the top and/or bottom slots in the torque plate.

If the pad is worn evenly, I would suspect that the slider(s) have seized up.
If the pad is worn with a taper, then it has probably seized where it rides in the slots in torque plate.

 

Yeah, it was evenly worn throughout that pad, but that pad was much much more worn than the other 3 i changed...so you think the problem is the upper and lower pad retainers?
