Only cosmetic changes between the years, although most would tell you to go for the 97-99 as they do look better in most people's opinions.

As Aminus21 stated the 97-99 looks better then the 95-96. I myself just bought a 4th gen. Got it on Friday. It is a 97 GLE Super Black. I am very happy with my purchase. It needs a little brake work but I am getting that looked at Wednesday. I am very surprised with the performance of it compared to my 1989 GXE. It is alot more responsive. Well the GXE had 240,000k verus the GLE only having 64k. I got it down from what the asking price of $8500 to $7300. I really wanted a 5 spd but the one that I saw and test drive was nice in all but it had 100k and needed a new cluth. I was not ready to dump that much on the clutch. I dont think you can really go wrong with any year 4th Gen but just read the FAQs above and they will help you out a lot.

4th Gen comparison

The 95-96 have a different front and rear bumper cover, grill, wheels, and tail lights. The general concensus is that 97+ has a sportier and nicer look. The Bose radio and other minor trim pieces are different from these years too. If you like to mod the cars appearance there are more options for the 97+ cars. Good luck.

well the real performance change didn't take place until '00, when the 5th gen Max made its debut and the VQ30 went from 190hp to 222hp (227 on '01 SE 20th Anniversary model), from '95-'99 it was all cosmetic changes

to give you an idea on what changed from '95-'99, I recommend reading the FAQ's for this
