Whirring noise from rear of car after shutdown...

Just got my alternator in (#2 at 32k miles!) and now I have some freaky whirring noise comming from the rear of the car after shutting it down. I made sure nothing in my garage was making hte noise, looked around and couldn't see anything under the car, checked to see what the fuel pump sounded like (by turning the key), and rocked the car to make sure it was slowly rolling with the brakes barely applied. It stopped after about 10 min and then was doing it again about an hour later. Anyone else dealt with this sort of thing?

Wow, I realize I'm a bit late in responding to your post, but I just discovered, the EXACT same thing with my car. It's definitely the car and not the garage. Sounds like servo motor noise coming from the gas tank so the only thing I can figure is the fuel pump...

Any ideas?

It might be the Evap system. Thats what someone said in one of my past thread.

I think its normal because I still hear it once in a while. Its a box near the rear driver side when you look underneath your car.

My 2K Maxima makes that noise too after being turned off. If I remove the gas cap the noise stops. I think the noise is related to pressure differences between the inside and outside of the fuel tank.

IIRC, there is an evap-related motor that deals with the fuel system after car shutdown to keep gas vapors from escaping into the atmosphere.

Maximized2000, Eric in Tempe and irish44j, thank you very much for your replies. It is members like you that make this a great forum. I'm going to get it checked out just to be safe, but I'm assuming the nosie is exactly what you have said it is. I just wonder why it never did it until now, 2.5 years after I got the car.
