Where is the location of the port where you can plug in a OBD II Scanner on the '01 Maxima? It doesn't appear to be located next to the ecu in the passenger side footwell as on 4th Generation Maximas.

Also, I wanted to confirm that a OBD II Scanner is the only way to pull trouble codes on the 2000-01 Maximas (unlike earlier & later models).

OBD II port should be under the dash below the steering wheel. I believe that's the only way to get the codes. At least it is on my 02.

 

Yeah, look underneath the dash where the fuse box lid cover is. You'll see the port where to plug in the OBII scanner. Yeah, the scanner tool is the ONLY way to pull codes from the ECU. It's not like the 4th gener's which have the set screw to count the flashes for reading the codes.
