Precautions for y-pipe
K, I should be getting my Y-pipe in on Friday. Any precautions I should look for? Like O2 sensors, how to carefully take them off etc. How long should I let the PB Blaster sit before trying to get the bolts off? Are there any special tools I would need, or can I do this by hand? Thanks everyone.
people say to leave it overnight, and put some pbblaster overnight on the o2 sensor's also and they will come off will a little tug the next day. just check out the faq's and it will tell you the tools you need.
A little thing I learned from recent install...The header bolts should come out without breaking off, need a 14 mm deep socket, some extentions, and a swivel. If you happen to take out a stud with the nut also, you can either just reinstall the stud or get a high grade bolt with M10 x 1.5 threading and just screw that into the manifold as a replacement. The threading for the nuts is M10 x 1.25 (highly recommend replacing all). MAKE SURE TO USE ANTI-SIEZE.
For the cat bolts, your prolly not going to be able to take them off succesfully. Basically what I did was just kept twisting the bolt until the bolt gave away and snapped off...then I just replaced the bolts.
A word on penetrant sprays. They work OK. But I don't suggest spend time waiting for it to soak, 10-20 min is enough, then once you actually torque the bolt loose a little (~1 turn) STOP THERE, then soak and wait 10 more min....then they should come off easily.
One last comment...DONT FORGET THE ANTISIEZE! ...you will thank me later

When you reinstall, its a special "lubricant" (silverish cream) ....basically you smear is all over the threads and it prevents them from rusting/corroding together so its MUCH easier to remove later on. Buy at pepboys or whatever
