New brakes acting up

Hey, I just put new pads and rotors on my car, pads all around and new front rotors. When I drive the fronts make a sound that only goes away when I brake, it sounds like metal on metal kind of. When I jacked the car off and took off the wheel, the brakes were right up against the rotors, its like they won't let go. It is only the fronts. My brother said once they wore in it would stop, is this true? Or is there something I did wrong. I did everything right and my dad helped me so I wouldn't think there would be. Please reply, thanks.

New pads generally do that for a little till they are mnore broken in....Tonight I installed only on the front, but I put some Brembo rotors with Hawk pads and they definitely sing when I drive.....I'm hopin the sound will go away as it has in the past after the new pads are worn in properly....just keep rollin'!

Thanks. I have never installed pads before on my car and didn't know this happened. It just worried me that I messes something up. Thanks again.

Did you put that grease - or whatever it is - on the backs of the pads?
It's supposed to help with the squealing...

So EXACTLY why would it only make noise when the brakes are applied and not all the time????

Did you use metallic pads?. I used them initially and drove for a few months and kept getting brake noise. I eventually switched to ceramic pads and the noise stopped.

I am using Raybestos QS from the group deal.

Jeff92se - There is no noise when I apply brakes, just when I am not using them. And during acceleration it goes away.

fast97maxse - I used anti-squeel on the back of the pads.

96pearlmax - I will try to bend it back, it looked a little bent when I put them on.

Thanks, I hope I get this worked out.

Sounds to me like your pads are riding the rotors ever so slightly - i.e. the caliper is not moving freely on the pins. Did you remove/re-lube the caliper pins? Its either that, or your pistons are not retracting fully causing the pads to make "more than normal" contact with the rotors. The pads will ALWAYS be touching the calipers - this is normal, but there shouldn't be any noise because of it - unless they are binding.

I removed the 4 bolts on the calipers and lubed those. Is there anything else I need to lube?
How do they bind?

It is normal to have a little squeal when the pads break in. Give it about 300 miles, and it will probably go away.

It's not really a squeel, it's more of a metal grinding sound. I've gone 100 miles, I'll see how it goes in a few weeks. Usually takes me a while to go 300 miles.

well what do you know...man says they were slightly bent. Dust shield can still scrap while not applying brake

Well what do you know, you still don't understand the question.

No that should be it... perhaps you have used metallic pads... you can of course over-pack grease onto those pins, and in effect have a vacuum lock in there so even though there is grease, the pins are binding.

The other possibility is a caliper piston that is not fully retracting when you release the brake pedal - this would cause excessive drag by the pads on the rotors and may sound like a grinding depending on the type of pad you used. The solution in this case would be either to rebuild the caliper, or more commonly, replace the caliper with a rebuilt one.
