hub /bearing questions
i went to replace my wheel bearings in the front so i took the spindle aoff and took it to a machine shop to have a new one pressed on an the guy called me an hour later and tells me my hub is bad i went and picked up my old one and im kinda puzzled wwhat makes this go bad ?how do you know its bad?
Those are exactly the questions you should be asking him.
There are a number of things it could be, but all it matters to you is what is wrong with yours. Surely he could tell you.
He may have pronounced it "bad" because he was confused about how it disassembles.

When the wheel bearings went bad on my first Maxima (front right corner), the bearings had completely siezed and the hub was spinning around the siezed bearings as I drove. This caused the race (the hub's bearing surface) to be ground away. That hub probably would not have worked with new bearings (I'm guessing; it looked pretty bad), so we pronounced the hub as "bad" and put a new one on.
The bearings do not ride on the hub, the inner races are pressed onto the hub and the bearings ride on the races, the outer race is pressed into the spindle. Ask to see the hub after the inner race is removed from it, look for maring or gouges in the metal. If it is only minor damage on the hub sand down the rough spots, press the new bearings in the spindle then press the hub into the bearings. The mechanic is probably trying to screw you because you don't know enough about working on cars. Thats why you gotta do it yourself.
Post #9 is correct. I replaced my front left bearings and ended up having to do the hub as well because I let it go for so long that the groves were too deep. If you let it go for as long as I did you won't be able to the the hub to press on correctly. I doubt the guy is trying to screw you unless he is trying to sell you a hub at the same time. It's all the same labor whether he uses a new hub or the old one. Just go take a look at it and see for yourself.
Oh, and take a look at this site. www.motorvate.ca there are good pics of a bearing replacement.
