Two questions :
On stock 1996 rims, can 215/55/16 tires fit?
Also, how difficult is it to install the FSTB?

The FSTB is one of the easiest mods to do.

All you need is a torque wrench. And possibly a breaker bar.

It takes no more than 15 minutes.

** sorry....I'm a new Max owner. It's an SE, and the wheels are not of the 5 spoke variety. Standard wheel size according to the spec is 215/60/15. Strangely enough, the tires on the auto now are 205/65/15. Not really sure as to why. I purchased it that way. I'm beginning to suspect that someone switched rims at one time in the car's life.

 

you do NOT want to put a 16inch tire on a 15inch rim, it'll be a bit loosey.

try 215/60/15 that would be the widest on the rim I'm thinking about.

 

You can't put 16" tires on a 15" rim, so no a 215/55/16 tire will not fit. It's not surprising that a 205/65/15 tire is on the car now. That is an acceptable replacement for the OEM size (215/60/15), of course it's not quite as wide as the original tires.

About the only choices that you have in tire sizes are what you have now, what came on the car, and maybe a 225/55/15 (uncommon size) or 225/60/15. Otherwise, you'll probably need to buy larger rims.

BTW, if you're current rims are a swirled seven spoke design like these http://www.aaarims.com/wheels/62319.JPG then that's what came on the '96 SEs.
