Rough shifts, but Nissan can’t find a thing…

My 02 Max with 47k has been shifting rougher by the day and the stealership tells me they can’t find anything. If I let off the gas at about 40 mph and then get back on the gas, I get a rough kick.. The car is shifting like my old 93 Quest that has over 170k. Has this happened to anyone else, if so what did you do? Nissan service stinks!

ya that same thing happened to me on my auto 01 max. I had the thing at 40 mph happen a few times, it would be a harsh kick(scared my mother one time when it did it on the highway). I also have a rough shift from 1st to 2nd around 5000 rpm. The first time i brought it to Nissan, they gave me a bull**** story, but did the tranny TSB anyway. I still shifted hard. I brought it back a few months later, and made a mechanic drive my car so i could point it out. He agreed with me, and i am now waiting for a new tranny to be ordered. If the second one shifts hard, im selling the car. Nissan service is the worst. Try a different dealership, see what they say. You have to push Nissan to get things done. Try making a mechanic go for a ride, and point out the problem, its the only thing that will work. Hope this helps you.

Thanks for the insight, it’s been extremely frustrating day.
Funny, an experienced Nissan technician can't find a problem as obvious as a transmission that feels like it’s going to fall out of the car. I’m with you on this one, if the car doesn’t shift the way it’s supposed to then I’ll be getting rid of mine too….

Anybody got a copy of the tranny TSB??? I'm going in next week and that would be a good thing to have. Thanks.

My car does the same thing. The tech drove with me and said that was normal. He also told me that a tranny flush would help with rough shifts. Nissan service blows.

After I was told that Naples Nissan’s best Nissan technician with 23 years experience exclusively working on Nissan’s that he could not find any thing wrong with my car, I decided to ask that my service advisor or the mechanic take a ride with me so that I could replicate the non existent condition. While on our test drive I proceeded to tell him that I bought a Maxima and that it should ride like a Maxima and not a Sentra. After taking a 15 minute ride with my Nissan service adviser, he agreed to take the car back today.

So to make a long story short, the service advisor who is not a mechanic acknowledged the rough shift that the 23 year Nissan veteran master technician said was non existent – go figure… Hopefully I’ll have some kind of positive solution this afternoon that I can share with the rest of those who are experiencing similar problems.

MOUNTS! I got same thing, took a while but figured it out. Loose mounts making the engine and tranny connection to be tough on the gears. Jumps like a biatch. Got new place racing mounts yesturday, gonna install tomorrow.

Nissan’s criteria for replacing is total BS! They mercilessly discovered that my motor mounts are worn but not totally shot yet. So what this means is that I have to drive around with these rough shifts till the mounts break, then they can be replaces by Nissan. What a crock of Shi@!
