Turbo Selection

I know this isn't the turbo section, but if I post about this in the turbo forum I'll get flamed endlessly.

Im trying to select the right turbo for the Max.
I been reading endless amounts of comp. maps and its all still confusing.

My max is auto so the highest the RPM's will get realistically is just above 3200. The cars top end is already pretty good so I will be mainly focusing on a quick acceleration.

The goal for psi is about 10, but I want to be able to dial it up to about 15.

Ive looked at everything from t3/t4 hybrids to gt25's.

As of right now Im leaning towards a TO4B. with a .84 a/r.

Any suggestions or other things I should consider when selecting the turbo?

Thanx

I don't know which turbo would be better suited, but for a first build up why not go with the stock Z31 turbo? Plenty abundant and cheap. How come yours doesn't ever get past 3200 rpm? There's lots of good power up in the revs, max hp is at 5200. Just flooring my Max and letting the tranny kick-down on its own has gotten it bouncing off the rev limiter , lot's of fun!

I don't know why I could never get it past 3200 in overdrive. Maybe it was due to the trany being on its last leg. But even if It could go past that I just want Seat of your pants acceleration.
Id rather get a Turbo new or reman. that im sure will outlast the engine. When the engine goes I plan on getting another one. This will be my weekend car for awhile.

Ive been driving a Civic for about a month now and the car kills me on the freeway. Right before the trany went(in the max) if I were cruising at 80mph and dropped out of O/D the tires would spin and the car would fly. I miss that.
3.0 kicks 1.7 anyday of the week.

Yea I agree it seems like you should try something less involving (if there is such in turbo'ing an n/a car). Since those turbos are cheap you might as well try out your setup with that before going for big boost. You're not really losing much that way and it sounds like a good match especially if you're keeping the slushbox. Once you get the Z31 setup down, I hear T3/T4 units are WICKED!

Yes it uses uncle bens
But not a lot, its good on gas.

Its weird not being able to hear the exhaust though.(moment of silence for the cat-back)

The thing about the TO4b is that it cost about 100$ more than a T3. So its really hard to settle for that when I know the TO4 is better.

D...get your car on the dyno. You'll be surprised the top end your car really has....the power curves on these car are not very impressive to be honest. It's a low to mid range car. Here are some comparisons:

My car with cone intake, 3rd gen 5-speed:

nismo87se...can't remember the mods

My guess is your hoovering around the 115-120whp and 135-150wtq range, considering minimal mods. With the .ar you have in mind for a to4b, that might be a little big for where you want the power (you want it down low, acceleration right?). With something like that your going to get more top end once boost kicks in....probably around 3500-4000 rpm. If you go with a t3 or a t3/t4, you'll have the benefit of boost coming in as soon as 2-2.5k rpm, and the low to mid end you want. You'll get a better top end, but not that fantastic of a top end.

Also with your .ar, I think that maybe a little big for this motor. You must remember what the newer gen guys use with VE's and VQ's will not neccessarily work as well with a VG. The VG breaths completely differently than those motors. I would look at a little smaller .ar honestly.....maybe around the .63 range. IMHO.

Good point sarin
I can get my hand on a t3/t4 for about 325$ shipped. It has a .54 ar.
I gota find some comp maps for it. See where the power will be at.
Remember that I do want acceleration, but the full boost has to come in by 3500-4000 rpm. Which is pretty soon. I was thinking that if I got a smaller turbo that it would spool fast, but choke when I was at the 100mph+ range.
Not that I plan to be there alot but Its nice to know I can when I want to.

Thanks for all the suggestions
If theres anything else you can think of please let me know. By the end of November I will start buying the pieces so hopefully by late spring I will have a Turbo'd Max.

Looks like my dyno's didn't show through. You can find them in the files section on the 2nd gen yahoo group.

Good luck!

Wow was I wrong!
TO4 is gonna be alittle big for this engine.
T3/T4 was right on sarin. Good looking out.
I guess I wasn't reading the comp maps right but I was in class last night reading the turbonetics catalog and the T3 family is just right. Only thing is when im on the freeway making passes I don't want the car to be a minute man. It needs to be able to hold and the turbo has to be able to go on 100+ mph conditions. Im not driving like that all the time but I have a person or two who need there a$$es handed to them.

It between the T3/T4 .54, and .63

Thats for the TO4B

Here's the T3 60 trim
http://www.turbocalculator.com/compr...maps/t3-60.jpg

After re-examining these im not sure.
For acceleration the T3
For top speed fun the T04
Decisions!

From the sounds of it you want acceleration. I myself want to stick with a t3/t4, maybe with a .63 ish AR. Get me about 8 psi of boost and I'm happy.

Im going to be running at 10psi daily. That's the goal.
Intercooled and with meth/water injection. So when I race I can raise it to 15psi.

Well if those go good then when I rebuild the engine I will probably drop the compression to 8.75. I don't want the full 8.5. And I can still build up more boost. On this motor 15psi is about the max without some serious heads and a crazy cam profile, intercooler,NOS. I wanna try the pathfinder intake manifold. Maybe someday.

If I had been watching F&F I would be asking which under chassis lights make my car go faster? And how much uncle bens is too much? Will DVD players give me a 10 second car? How many flames on the body until the car hits 200mph?

I don't think your car can do that until you get the flame thrower coming out the muffler. Why have an exhaust if you cant roast marshmellows with it?

Thanx folks for all the responces. I've made my decision. Bigger is better. I want acceleration and I want highend power and I shall have them both.

Sarin if this works I want to formally extend a challenge. A race with the only car that can compete with the mighty 88 maxima. The 86! (god im retarded)
I say we meet in a neutral location and race. Oregon or one of those loser states between cali and New york.

When should I be ready as of right now it looks like the end of spring?

hmmmm, I'd be willing to do something....if I'm built by then of course. It's has to be at a track.....definately like Woodburn or something (which might be a further drive for you). Right now with how busy I am, I'm not sure when and if I will be built. But when I am, it'd be fun to compare.

shup ******

there are accually quite a few auto cross courses scattered through the I5 corridor, theres one near by me but its a super twisty turny flat course so you'll be spinning if your a lead foot no matter what you drive. i havent driven it because at the moment my car leans more than the tower of piza and my bushing are literally shredded and i cant find any poly urethane ones to replace them with

Well, if it's the twisties, D does not stand a chance against me....but that's because he hasn't done anything with his suspension while I'm fully lowered, with FSTB, RSB and KYB GR2's......and the turbo might help in in the straights....I'll just get him in the corners.

This is power vs power.....1/4 mile track is race for this.

Oh yeah.

Big wheel to big wheel!

If the turbo lasts for about a month the car will have the suspension too. So it will be a driver challenge. Whoever is the better driver will determine the winner.

I dunno, I've been in Sarin's, and I have to say that that thing handles like it's on rails! It's so glued to the road you could toss it around like a go-kart! It really is incredible the level of handling that can be acheived in an old Max. Even with more power on tap, it won't matter if you can't put it to the ground, and Sarin is all set to put it down.
