There is a hose that goes from the intake to the top of the engine. I accidently broke the plastic where the hose attaches to the intake. What is this for? Where I can I get another one if I need it? There is enough of a lip left that I was able to duct tape the hose where it is supposed to go. I know, I am an idiot.

 

While I've only had my Maxima for a week and I haven't taken a look at the motor to identify all those devices, I have done a lot of work on my Mustang and I'm an automotive technician.

It looks like a breather. Nothing more than an emissions device. Don't be fooled by the sound of "emissions device," you're not affecting performance but you do need to plug the side on your intake and put something on the valve cover to keep it from blowing oil out of it (Try a breather filter) or you may have drivability problems.

Oh, and btw. You're gauranteed to fail state inspections without having it completely restored to the factory configuration.

 

wtf are you talking about? that just helps ventilates the engine, just get a breather filter for like about 5bux and put it on. as for the hole on the intake resonator, just tape it up or some **** u dont want dust in there

Where would I get a breather filter, and what does it look like. Luckly, there aren't emissions tests in Michigan.

 

that is past the point of the filter, so i'm leaning towards no oil being blown through that hose.

 

OK I just took a look at mine. It most definitely looks like a breather. How did you manage to break it anyways? Seems somewhat sturdy.

A complete cold air kit should restore the breather's functionality. Do you still have the hose?

 

WTF am I talking about? Breather filters that are exposed to the atmosphere are not emissions legal. Even if you don't have emissions tests, you probably still have state inspections that check all of your emissions devices for full functionality.

 

motorcross look at my sig on the valve cover, youll see a red round thing its basically a mini filter, pepboys and autozone should have it. cheezwiz please shut the fawk up man dam

No, PCV is somewhere else. That's just a breather.

To find the PCV you follow the metal lines on top of your intake manifold, when you find a short 2-3 inch rubber hose and then a plastic piece that sits in a rubber grommet, you have found the PCV valve. It's the plastic piece.

 

Most cars have a long rubber hose connected to the PCV valve, our Maximas don't afford us the luxury, you probably have to remove a couple bolts holding the metal line down to get enough play to slide the PCV valve out.

Nissan made something that should take 10 seconds to swap into something difficult =\

dont know how exactly to change it but really all it does is when gas and air sneaks up in to the crankcase it is put back into the air intake and it is re burned. it saves you fuel and older vehicles (like from the 60's) would just vent this out of the car. it shouldnt be that hard to find a part to fix that. and if your going to replace the valve itself i think u just buy a new one and pull out the old one and pop in the new one (from the engine block not the intake side) prob only like 5$ for the valve itself

To be honest I don't know what purpose a PCV valve serves when there's a breather, and vice versa. They both connect some part of the crankcase to the intake. But Nissan saw the need for both so I won't argue.

tomservo291 Just about all cars on the road have a PCV valve and/or breather which relieves crankcase pressure into the intake, after the filter. So naturally, some oil may make it through which is burned by the engine. It's negligible, but the effect usually gets worse with higher miles. So, while it might sound bad to you. It happens to pretty much every car on the road.

 

i think the pcv is under the intake manifold on the driver side? neways motorcross just cover up that hole on the intake box and that should be goo for now untill you get a breather or what ever to put on the block

 

so if oil comes out of there, why would it go back through the throttle body? or does is it just a little oil going in there that it doesnt matter?

 

Also, if the PCV valve looks like it might be a *****. Jiffy Lube will change it for $10, just go in and say you want a PCV valve and nothing else. I just busted a knuckle on mine so that's looking pretty tempting, lol.

try gluing the plastic. buy a mid pipe or new resonator if you cant fix the old one.


FYI oil blow by happens to both the PVC and the valve cover. I have an oil catch can between the pcv and IM. it works and catched lots of oil. I took out the resonator and put in a custom mid pipe and a breather filter to keep my engine as clean as possible.

every auto store will have a "breather filter". The last time I noticed, looked like a ricer thing... at least that's the section it was in.

Good grief, just replace the hose!

When I was putting my CAI in last week, the big stock rear hose wasn't long enough to fit onto the pipe, so I took my brother's car to NAPA and the guy gave me a rubber tube that was nearly the same bending with the same radius. I went back home, popped the hose on, and called it good.

Just rig the hose onto the intake (use your imagination), and stick it on the other end and then realize that it's no big deal

Yeah, it was my mom's car before I bought it and she put on AR wheels, an SE spoiler, and a beginners (Head unit, amp, sub) sound system I gave her as an anniversary gift got passed onto me

The engine is stock, though. I'll be starting with the rusted exhaust: y-pipe, cat, and cat-back. But I don't want to detract from this guy's thread, I'll make a new one.

Great idea...tape the hole on your intake. No way does the intake past the filter have enough suction to suck that tape into your engine.

 

Tennessee has no inspections at all. Sadly, cause there are a LOT of POS's running around, but there are people with no freakin' hoods on their cars, no font bumper, radiators just shinin' to the world, ect.
Tennessee has no inspections at all what-so-ever, so it doesnt matter what you have under your hood as long as you dont get caught street racing you'll be fine.

Minnesota also has no kind of emissions at all ... I lived there for the first 19 years of my life (the last 2 have been here in TN)

You can find some electrial conduit pipe of the right size then glue it in with liquid nails or something. Or maybe some threaded steel/galvanized pipe from the pipe section. Then just thread it in. That should seal it. But make sure it's not too large or the plastic will crack. Or you might have to drill the hole to the same/or slight smaller size to thread it in.
