Do you actually use your DVD player?

I'm in the market for a new head unit to help resolve the Bose/iPod issue and to add a sub (I've done all the research re: harness, etc. so don't reply about that).

The new head unit I'm looking at is a double-din and has a 6.5" touch screen monitor with DVD player and is navigation ready. I seriuosly doubt I'd ever use the DVD player while driving, it's too distracting and there's nothing I want to see that I couldn't wait until I got home to watch. I think it would get old after the initial "newness" wears off. I don't do shows and I'm not going to have a TV in each headrest. It's not for anyone else but me. But, I think it would be nice to have IF needed. I would like the navigation feature down the road and that's one reason I'd consider getting this head unit.

So my questions are:
1) Is the DVD player/monitor worth it?
2) How often do YOU actually use it?

I've already bought the 5th Gen GXE trim so the head unit will sit flush and look like it's meant to be there. I don't like the fold out monitor single-din head units.

1) i have the single din panasonic, i defintly think that it was worth the $650, dont regret buying it one bit.

2) about once in a blue moon, or everytime i go on a road trip. i like it because on long trips i get annoyed of the person that is in the car with me, get tired of thier talkin, so i just put a movie in, and it shuts them up.

I used to have a pioneer single din dvd player and it was the biggest waste of money ever i spent about 650 for all the dvd stuff and i used it like twice and had some problems with it and so i sold it off. basically dvd players belong in vans not maxes waste your money on mods that you will use not on a dvd player. just my advice.
nice looking max

Thought about doing the whole dvd/cd thing. I had the pioneer dvh-p5000mp and the microvision but never installed it. I sold it instead and gonna use the money for a skiing trip this december.

havent watched a dvd in a good week or so but it works great during bumper to bumpe rtraffic. Also makes the car an entertainment center when you and friends dont want to chill in the house. (smoking or something )

Most players built for the automotive environment have a wire that you would connect to your emergency brake which will not allow the player to operate unless it senses a ground source. Alpine has this; Pioneer has it; and my current set-up (Pyle monitor/Pyle in-dash DVD player) has it.

I use my DVD player all the time, to be honest. But that's because I've been gearing my car for 'show-ready' status. I've got a 12-year-old that loves movies as much as I do - so when we cruise, he pops in a movie and watches it. Plus, it's kinda fun - even after having this kind of setup for 2+ years - to drive up to McDonalds, Burger King, or some other drive-thru, and see the look on the persons' faces when you're placing your order with a porno showing in the background!

However, I wouldn't think it to be of much use, if you don't have a show car - unless you just like fancy electronic gadgets.

(disclaimer - NO, I don't ride around watching movies, and I don't watch porno with my son/daughter in the car... that's just CRAZY!)

Remember you are in Atlanta and you can use it for that 1-1.5 hours that you spend in traffic

You know me, I used to use that sucker atleast once a day. I say get the double din along with the navi and you will def love it!

Wow! Thanks for everyone's input.

The more I think about it (and from the responses here), I probably should not get the new head unit. I was just so excited when I finally saw the double-din one I've been looking for. I really wanted the ease of hooking up my iPod and adding a sub (that's been sitting in the basement for a while) and the thought of having the option of Navi/DVD/touch screen was cool too. But, I think I could spend the $900 on better things that I'd get more use out of.

If the stress of sitting in traffic an hour each morning and afternoon gets to me any more, I may reconsider this idea.

when im pipin ***** in the back seats...when im hot boxing the car(3 times a day avg) or gettin drunk in the club parking lot..stuck in traffic...when im driving down the beach, its always nice to play a porno to get some chiken heads to flok the car...when i have a bunch of annoying fcukin people in my car and want to shut them all up(the kid watchin tv trick)..play music videos...

but in all honesty...none of these things happen on a daily basis...so id say i use my dvd unit 1-3 times a MONTH if i even use it all..id say i use my TV tuner more than my dvd to watch The Hurricanes run all over these sorry as5 teams :chukle: but...w.e it is a waste of money, but if u balling like some of us then its always nice to brag...get on my level ...

its a 50/50 get HP power or pu55y power...

to be honest i hardly ever use the thing, and if i do its at a car show or to show someone thats never been in my car and asks about the screen in the dash. Otherwise the screen just sits there powered off. I do get the urge once in a while to flip it on and cruise to some music dvds but im sorta tired of the whole dvd/tv thing. But sitting in traffic or comin home late night from a club/bar makes the ride that much better, hehe.
The unit your buying seems to be your best bet, cause for one its your primary radio and cd player and for two you have the option for the dvd when you feel like it. Which one you getting BTW... The new Kenwood?

Are you serious about the first paragraph? You're 18. What do you know about pu$$y at 18? Are you black...who plays porno's in the car? How do you ball in a 1998?

I'm 26, bought a brand new house and have a serious girlfriend...get on MY level.

i have the same set up at Sprintmax. my main motivation was to get a DVD burner on my cpu and throw about 3 gigs of mp3s onto one DVD and play that in the car. That was my ultimate goal. I still haven't gotten the DVD burner. As far as movies n stuff, i've only watched one movie in my car, by myself. Another time i was with friends and they loved it. Music Videos on DVD are also a plus!

I have the DVD/Navi combo just like Oss. I use it often and I think it's worth every penny.

It really isn't that hard, depending on the unit.
