added headsup display to my car

figured I'd post here for non 3rd gen guys

Some 3rd gens had HUD (headsup display - projects speed onto windshield). It was only an option for GXEs and very rare (even more than auto climate control). I found the parts I needed from the junkyard and installed it all a couple days ago (definitely not plug-play). I need to put a piece of tint film on the windshield to help the reflection, but it's easy enough to read right now unless it's really sunny out.

hard to get a good shot of it, but here's 24MPH

night shot

Wow, those 4th gen wheels really fit a 3rd gen nicely. Much better than any 5th gen wheels on a 4th gen

What kind of devices project an LED image like that? Could you use a bright 2-digit LED display with some kind of lens? Or I guess you could write out the LED fonts so it displays characters backwards...
I swear, that would be a cool mod (though it'd require serious dashboard modifications)

err actually, a 3 digit would be better... nah maybe not, nobody goes over 100 anyway do they

it does have 3 digits so I made sure the 100s digit worked yesterday

it is basically just a bright LCD display with a mirror in front of it that shoots it up towards the windshield and it's reflected there back to the driver (from the factory, they had special windshields that had a spot right there to help reflect the image better than regular glass).

JSutter - the trim piece definitely wouldn't fit 4th gens so you'd have to do something on your own there. The speed sensor would have to be the same for 3rd and 4th gens for that to work also and I have no idea if that's the case or not

MikeD - thanks, I've always liked these 5 spokes and think they fit the 3rd gen very well. They look nice IMO but still almost look stock.

Pat - glad to see you're always true to your VE rooots

I had actually fixed a 1989 Nissan 240SX's digital speedometer one time and it had that... it had some special rectangular "tint" on the windshield for it. So it's more like an LED display shining at a mirror, huh? Hmmm.
It's a shame they didn't keep the HUD/digital speedo around much longer, guess they had too many problems with it (that aforementioned speedo had a small circuit board sitting perpendicular to the main board with tiny solder joints that had cracked, so some fresh solder fixed it)

Hey guys, another source you might be able to find these HUDs is in the 1st or 2nd gen Altimas. I believe they are the same units as the 3rd gen Maximas. Happy hunting.

I wonder if the ones from the S13 240SX's would work also?

yeah, there are several other older Nissan models that did use HUD. I'm not sure if the speed sensors in these cars are the same or not though so it may or may not work. But the main problem would be fitting it in the dash. You'd have to custom make your own trim piece to fit the contours of your dash. Wouldn't be too bad for someone with fiberglass experience I think, but might be hard to make it look stock-ish.
