new windshield wipers still smudge
new windshield wipers still smudge
What is the best to use to clean your windsheild? The problem is I washed my winsheild with sponge + soapy water and even bought new wipers BUT the wipers still leave a waterfilm/smuge on the windshield when it rains.
Thanks for the input

You could try a glass cleaning product. Wal-mart has some auto-glass polish/stripper that is good. Its a very mild abrasive to clean the gunk off the windshield. It does build up. I use that stuff maybe twice a year.

What Canadian said, you can get a glass stripper product.
Also, put some vinegar on a clean rag/towel and wipe your blades. You'll get a lot of junk off it.
Personally, I've had very good results using Diamondite glass cleaner/prep.

Another poster mentioned RainX. I prefer Castrol Accuvision. Its a LOT easier to apply than RainX is:

Thanks to you all for the suggestions. I've tried rain-x and doesn't work very long and there's also still some smudging. Since I have new wipers I'm thinking it's the windshield coated with invisible gunk. I'll try the vinegar on the blades like packet suggested and the special glass stripper cleaner like canadian suggests. I can't wait to see in the rain again
Thanks.
Go for it. Don't forget to treat your headlights, side windows and mirrors with the AccuVision. Helps keep water off that glass/plastic as well.

If you can't wash the film off the windshield, try using a glass polish to clean it. Then apply RainX to the windshield. In my case, I wax all of the windows when I wax my car, but some people are afraid of streaks from the wax. As long as you make sure to remove it completely there are no problems, and it beads very nicely.
Wax or RainX (or similar product). It's your choice.

You could also try 303 windshield wiper treatment. I got my 12 packets the other day. The directions say that one packet will treat 2-3 blades, but I ran out of wiper blades before the packet was used up! I did both of mine, both on my mom's car, and all three n my dad's van (2 windshield, 1 rear ws). It hasn't rained or anything since I applied it, so I can't say how well they work. They claim to protect the rubber blades, as well as stop any smearing or chattering. My dad's van has one new blade and one old chattering blade. We'll see how the chattering is next time it rains.
BTW, the 12 packets (2 boxes) were $6.99 total.

Not quite. The glass is always under some form of contamination like the paint is. I definitely would recommend claying it to remove the contaminants and then following it with a decent glass polish and then the treatment for the wiper blades.
You can also try silicone wiper blades instead of rubber ones. I use SilBlades but I've seen other brands out there. They never streak, smudge or anything regardless of how much grime is on the windshield. They even come with a 5 year warranty and come in different colors but I got black.

They are a little more money but they are awesome, even in subzero weather they don't crack, chip or chatter. Ice doesn't stick to them as easily either. Really great wipers. I've had them on several cars and when I sell the car I take them off and re-use them. They really are very good.

Those are really the best. Had it on my car for over a year, even in the harsh NY winters. I was replacing blades on average, every 3-6 months (Bosch Microedge).
I don't think I'll be replacing these Silbades for a while.

I think the smudging has a lot to do with the structural integrity of the actual glass. As the miles build up thousands of little chips are created from rocks and sand. The pitting is so small that it is only extremely visible in the worst areas. The water sits in these pits and the blade can't get to it no matter what method of cleaning or protection you use. Polishing helps with this but it can't get the deepest ones unless you really go at it. A new windsheild will be the same price as all these products. LOL, J/K

I will definitely be looking at these as my next blades. With a 5 year warranty I was thinking they would be more $$, but the price isnt bad.
