y pipes legal?

thinking about getting a budget y pipe for my 99 maxima but i heard that your car will fail emissions tests with a y pipe. I just wanted to know if that was true and if it is can you get a legal y pipe?

yeah,, you have to let the car warm up fully,, the pre-cat is removed,,,,depends where you live tho..In Maryland,, as long as your check engine light is not on, and you have cleared all your codes before the test...you pass.......no visual inspection of exhaust,, i had two holes in my muffler and passed..lol.

The precats in the ypipe are only needed on startup. Once warm the main cat will take of you. You should pass emmissions...just get the car warmed up and don't turn it off before the test.

The y-pipe is illegal though. They are "for offroad use only."

sunysb83 is correct ... installing an aftermarket y-pipe will get rid of the pre-cat. This is only really useful when the main cat has not yet warmed up from the exhaust gasses.

You shouldn't have a problem passing the sniffer emissions test, but some states will fail you in visual inspection since you've removed OEM emissions equipment. It depends on how strict your state inspection is ...

They dont test the tail pipe in New Jersey. Make sure your ECU is good. And get stainless steel pipes to pass the visual test.

Y-pipe gain?

Just purchased a 97 SE, assuming standard Y-pipe. What 'real-world' gain can I hope for with a catman or other Y-pipe?

I have the Warpspeed pipe ... I love it. Got in on the group deal a few months back though. At any rate, check the classifieds for a used one ... can usually get them for $150-$175 shipped. Or, look around eBay.

Either way, you should plan on spending about $150-$250 depending on if it's new or used (including shipping).

The warpspeed Y is $160 shipped if you mention the org. Just did it last week, the post might still be on the group deals page.

Just went through a E-test in Canada. I have Brullen Y and B pipe. Brullen would be similar to Budget. I passed no problems, but I took it out on the highway and let it warm up really good for about 15 minutes before my test, and I left the car outside running while waiting for the test. My results were around middle of the road, but never on the high side. Budget is pretty good, a lot of the guys are satisfied with them on the Canadian forums, but we like Brullen as well. Otherwise, go with whatever is relatively cheap but still stainless steel!

About 2 years ago, I had an emission inspection from the tail pipe. I drove around for around 1/2 hour and still failed emission. I guess the cat has to stay warm at the time of emission inspection. I didn't want to deal with the time annoying repeating emission inspection so I changed back to stock. This year I went to another auto shop because I didn't like my previous auto guy. I have an emission inspection done from the ECU. Does the ECU self-register emission information or is this a new way for emission inspection?
