Sparks and fuel filter: $380

Got a quote from the dealer. $380 for changing the Spark plugs and the fuel filter, which they called the Basic Tun-up, along with checking the timing.

Mannnnnnn, that pisses me off. I'll do the sparks and filter myself. Does any one knows how to check/adjust the timing? don't you need a little "light-gun" to check the timing (or is that only for the belt?).

My god... just get the plugs on your own... NGK Platinums run about $60 for the set or $10 for coppers and the fuel filter is about $10... All it will take is about an hour of your time.

I'll link you instructions for the sparks in a minute.

Coppers (NGK BKR5e-11) are alot cheaper (<$2 vs. $10 ea.), but don't last as long as the plats (30k vs 60k). I use the coppers because I don't mind changing them, but if you do then go for the plats.

You don't need to adjust timing.

I can believe the spark plug and fuel filter costs, not that they are reasonable but believeable. Most shops charge extra labor for transverse fwd v6 motors. The rear plugs are a little harder to get to....but in the maxima's case it's not hard at all.

Assuming you have a set of sockets and an extension, you could do it for less than $25 and about 2hrs at the very most.

What gets me is checking the timing. That is a straight scam.

$380? My Gawd. I hate dealerships. I bought a plastic box to go in place for the aftermarket head unit, they charged me $26! Oh, and a new AC costs about $215 for the manual, and $200 for the automatic control.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll go with the Plat. plugs. Save 30k miles before I re-change them.

SHould I get the spark plugs from the dealer? They would cost about the same if I order it online, right?

Your very right about that, Autozone is useless when it comes to NGK, their big thing is Bosch.

I'm not sure what is a distributer.

In any case, I figure, If I am going to spend an additional $50 and save me a couple of hours then it would be worth it (specially since I still have to go out and buy the tool). But ofcourse, their price is so high that I will do it myself. I guess I want to have an idea of how much I was going to save by doing it on my own. hahahah.
