Idea for interior dome lamp...

I know a lot of you couldn't care less about your passengers in the backseat, but I kinda do. And I find it strange that the Maxima, which comes with a pretty good standard feature set, has no maplights for the rear passengers. I was thinking about finding a dome lamp with map lights built into it. I know of at least two vehicles that have that type of setup, but of course making the thing fit is a different story. Does this sound like something I should bother with or just a total waste of money and effort?

depends if you really carry that many people in your back seats that need a light. to me, it would serve no real benefit, but to others, it may be a good idea. so, it is up to you...

I think it's a great idea. I often would like more light in the car. I hope it works out for you!

the thought of having the maplights from the bmws nowadays has always been in the back of my mind. in my friend's 330, there are two lights that are always on, I think, and illuminate directly down, and in orange, the same color as the dash lights, etc. if somehow that could be incorporated into our maxes, that would be sick.

Yeah, my buddy's got a 325ci that has the ambient orange lighting. It shines down onto the shifter area from somewhere near the rearview mirror. But we do have the lighting under our climate controls that shines down onto the shifter, it's just not orange or as bright.

Yeah, I plan on making those lights down there brighter at some point, but I'm still wondering about the map lights for the back passengers.

this is what i did to my dome light, i used 19 17,000mcd leds. the whole car is lit up. it is great.

But if you want personal lights for the rear passengers, you could just get the units from another car and cut a hole in the fabic on your roof, and intall/wire them up. thay are only 3-4 inches big, and have one bulb with a switch on them. i think it would more simple then to figuge out how to mount up an new dome light since the screew hole would be diffrent.
