anyone have this gas mileage issue??
anyone have this gas mileage issue??
I have this 95 gle maxima with 91k+ miles on it I had a tune up about a year and a half ago and it's freaking me out with this ridiculous gas consumption....I did an overall estimate that it's eating up 210 miles from a full tank which is around 15. something gallons....anyone get the same mileage as my pieace of **** does or better?
read the faqs there is a long description of potential problems that chould cause such bad gas milage, you'd be suprised how simple things could cause bad gas milage, especially if you had a tune up a year ago, and if that was when you last had your air filter changed then that itself could be the culprit.
check the faqs

I'll guarantee you that 95% of all maximas get maybe 17-18mpg from mixed driving. I can get maybe 150miles from a 1/4 tank driving on the highway but as soon as I get back on the streets I get maybe 100 miles the rest of the tank if that. I've had 2 maxes already, auto and manual, and they both get the same crappy gas mileage. The manual gets a bit better mileage at around 200-220 for maybe 14 gallons of gas. My friends' maximas are ALL the same.
I constantly get above 21 mpg city in my Max (5spd, CAI, 158000 miles), but I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
BTW, the 4th gen Maxima gas tank is 18.5 gallons. I've gone over 300 miles with a 1/4 tank left with mostly highway driving.

City driving is a completely different animal from highway driving and it really shows on the Maxima.
On the highway at a steady 75 mph, I can get 27-28 mpg. In the city it is more like 18-20 mpg.
I've got a datalogger that plugs into the ODB-II port. It shows in my normal commute my car is idling over 25% of the time. How many miles per gallon do you get sitting at a stoplight? Zero.
I can only maintain a steady speed about 30% of the time. The rest of the time is spent accelerating and deccelerating. That's where the fuel is going.
Just as an experiment, try getting the best fuel economy possible in the city. For at least one tank of gas, drive like a grandma. Don't accelerate hard, slow down way before you get a stop. Keep the RPMs below 3000. Your fuel economy will improve, but it will still be relatively poor because of all the stop-and-go driving. The EPA city rating for our cars is like 21 mpg, BTW. Just find out what is the best you can do.

That's normal. I get about the same mileage. Is normal in the city.

so how do get get the mpg; seems like in my case 90% highway, 10% city get 420 miles with fuel light for about 30 miles; so I should do 420 miles divide on 18.5 gallons per tank = 22.70 MPG; is that right?. Is the tank really 18.5 gallons? as per at the emptiest I filled with 17.5 gallons, so I figure was more like 18. Some people think are 17 gallons. However theses cars are really bad in fuel economy, specially for me that drive 100 miles everyday. I missed my old honda. $35 every 4 days hurts me a lot; my friend has a Geo $15 dls. the whole week. Huge difference, eh?

You want to take the average of 3-5 fill-ups. It helps to go to the same gas pump each time for consistency.
Fill-up at the pump. Reset your trip odometer. Run the car close to empty. Fill-up at the same pump. Record number of gallons required for the fill-up. Record your mileage from the trip odometer. Repeat several times over the course of your normal routine.
Now, add the total number of gallons used together. Add the total miles together. Divide number of miles by number of gallons to get average miles per gallon.
Average miles per tank can be computed = (average mpg * 18.5). Otherwise known as your car's range.
