Greeting!

Just bought my third Maxima (I had '98gle and still have 98 SE 5sp) - 02 6sp.
In a couple of days or two the SES ligh came; I didn't give it much thought and took it back to the dealer (since the car has 1000miles/1 month warranty) - and what a surprise - when didn't find anything and simply reset the ECU. Well, the light came back again and I noticed the the car is idling on about 1000rpm. Pulled the code (using procedure described here at the forum) and it's 0507 - high idle. My question - is it adjustable as on my 4th generation, with the screw? I didn't find any, ant the TB seem to be totally different type. As an afterthought, I recall that it started idling high after I cleaned the TB and run the motor with 3M intake system cleaner (the procedure which I reported last year on the 4th gen forum - a really good stuff!)
So, how we adjust the idle speed on 5th gen Maxima?

we have that drive by wire system in our cars and i think cleaning it really messes it up. Someone who has this problem can chime in but i think your sol

 

Well, based on my experience with several other cars, Nissan and, lets call them non-Nissan, after cleaning with 3M intake cleaner, and a LOTS of white smoke from the tailpipe, the idle speed always goes up, so I considered this normal exept don't know how to adjust it. BTW, this is the very same stuff they sell you at the dealer, so it's not some BS.

 

Us 02' guys don't need to clean the throttle body. I hope you're under 60K miles because the throttle body is $1000 bucks from the dealer. Me along with many other members have had ours replaced under warrently.... thank god.

I would take it too the deal if I were you and not say a thing. The dealer told me that I had shorted out the TB somehow. I'm pretty sure it was because I was playing around with the butterfly valve and unplugged the TB without disconnecting the neg battery terminal.

 

Everytime you unplug the throtle body you have to do the throtle idle learning procedure. I think you can find how to do that in the sticky on top. I would unplug the throtle body then plug it back in and do the procedure before you start your car. Worked for me had the same problem.

 

Funny...cleaning the TB was exactly that the dealer said they did...I really doubt they did though. The car has 63K on it

 

Tx jladislav, I'll try that. Although I didnt un-plug the TB; but I did disconnect the battery.

 

I went through all those steps with relearning the idle and resetting the ECU. The car would run fine, but as soon as I turned it off and started the car back up my idle was at 900rpm again. Like I said I'm not sure exactly how my throttle body shorted out, but just do a search and you'll find several org members who have had a whole lot of problems.

 

Save you some trouble:

Please read all instructions and be familiar with them before any attempts.
A stop watch or an analog clock with a second’s needle will be useful.
ECU Resetting Procedures
Timing is extremely critical. If it is NOT DONE within the specify time, the ECU will not reset and the Check Engine Light (CEL) will continue to remain ON.

Operations Procedures
1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).
2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking.
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)
5. Wait about 10 second.
6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.
7. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).
8. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car. The CEL light should be gone.
If the CEL light continues to remain ON, repeat the above steps. Timing is EXTREMELY critical to resetting the ECU.

Accelerator Pedal Release Position Learning
Operation Procedure
1. Make sure that the accelerator pedal is fully released.
2. Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
3. Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
4. Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
5. Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning
Operation Procedures
1. Make sure that accelerator pedal is fully released.
2. Turn ignition switch is “ON”.
3. Turn ignition switch is “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
Make sure that the throttle valve moves during above 10 seconds by confirming the operating sound.

Idle Air Volume Learning (Throttle Position Learning)
It is better to count the time accurately with a clock.
Operation Procedures
1. Perform “Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning”.
2. Perform “Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning”.
3. Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
4. Turn ignition switch “OFF” and wait at least 10 seconds.
5. Conform that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
6. Repeat the following (steps 7a, 7b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
7a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD)
7b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
8. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 20 seconds until the Check Engine Light (CEL) stops blinking and turned ON.
9. Fully release the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after the CEL is ON.
10. Start engine and let it idle.
11. Wait 20 seconds.
12. Rev up the engine two or three times and make sure the idle speed and ignition timing are within the specifications.

Well, I did as suggested by the members, step by step, starting with checking for leaks (couldn't find any - everyting looks and sounds normal). The idle would restore to a normal level at ~650RPM until the engine shut-off. Once restarted, the idle speed goes back to ~ 1000 RPM. It looks like ECU will not save the info.
Any suggestions what else to try (short of taking the car to the dealer)?
Other than high idling speed, the car drives normally.

Opening this thread again. Anyone know how to fix it. It seems the learning procedures dont take. i cleaned my tb and it drops a 0507 code. Any ideas

 

just wanted to post this for future readers and also , would this TSB for the 0507 code mean that there is no cost to the customer?

i think the idle speed has to be reset with a consult 2. I have the same problem but the consult could not change the idle. So I am getting a warranty replacement

 

Unplug the negative battery terminal for 36+ hours.

Works for some, but not all.

 

I'll try that this weekend when I won't need the car.

 

Remember that for the Idle Air Volume Learning to work the engine has to be essentially fully WARMED UP (including the Auto tranny), and no loads on it. No air, electrical and wheels straight. On some Gen. 5.5s where the idle cannot be brought down into limits, the dealers use the info in the above mentioned TB to deal with it.

 

Well i had the obd 2 scanner clear the code twice and it still comes back. Went off long enough to get a new sticker. Looks like the dealer is going to have to relearn the ecm. Will it be done for free or is there a charge and how much. i have 42k on it so the warranty is over.
