I didn't know about HLSD on 6 speed when I got my 03 max. Mistake not to get it?

When I got my 03 sheer silver 6 speed i was under the impression HLSD only came on auto's. So I was not even looking for it. I am now having second thoughts about my decision in light if the fact that I know you can get HLSD on manual trannies as well. How useful is it, and is this something I should look into changing/getting.?

HLSD only comes on certain 6 speeds, the autos were never available with LSD transmissions... (someone, please correct me if I'm wrong). Also, you really don't need it but, it's great to have when you want to get out of a turn fast. You'll be fine with the regular 6 speed.

I Think all the 03s had the HLSD...there is a way to tell by the VIN.
Someone post the answer please.

Yes, the car is useless without it. You can give your car to me and I'll get rid of it for you

Serioulsy....billions of people have done just fine without it. Don't sweat it.

Mine doesn't have it (I dont think). I thought it only came with the Titanium package or whatever BS on 2002/2003's.

Though, I'm pretty sure I'm able to get both front wheels smoking... maybe I do have it. Hmm.

In any case, the car seems fine without it.

one wheel burn outs are weak. but, then again... how often do i do a burn out? hardly ever!

you don't need it, but it is a nice feature to have. i was under the impression that only certain 2002's had it (the ones that were bulit later in the year) and all 2003's had it...

The slip light won't come on and I'm about 99% positive you couldn't get traction control without having an automatic anyway (since the slip light is tied to traction control)... But I've read somewhere that if your car came with FACTORY AE pedals in 02 / 03 you have HLSD. However, there is a way to tell positively under the hood, but I still don't know what to look for or where to find it; someone help me out. And I'm pretty sure HLSD an option in 02 / 03 and not standard (still have the 2003 window sticker ($32,500+!!!)) and its a $399 (??) option on there.

HSLD equiped models came with drilled pedals, but these can be added, so it's not always a sure thing. I believe that the VIN # will have an 'H' near the end. Or check the window sticker if that's available.

It's nice to have, but not necessary.

No, they didn't all have it. Yes there is a way to tell by the VIN, but only if you enter it into Nissan's Parts CD and pull up the option codes.

Incorrect. It was introduced in the Feb-02 models of the 2002 as an option. Priar to Feb-02, it was not available.

Titanium Edition was only offered in 2003, but included HLSD.

To know if you have it or not, look at your pedals. If they came from Nissan with pedals similar to the AE pedals, then you have HLSD. If you have the rubber pedals like everyone else, then you don't have it.

Anyway, here is what you have to look for on the plate in the engine bay:

The engine code will read : VQ35(DE)

If you have a 6 speed with an open differential, the code will be: RS6F51A

A as in open diff

If you have a 6 speed with a Helical Limitd Slip Differential the code will read RS6F51H

H as in Helical.
Just found this with ghetto google search technology.

I would love to know how to tell if I have HLSD. I have the drilled pedals but I'm not sure if they were added by the previous owner. Can someone offer some definitive info on how to tell? Thanks

Edit: someone answered while I was replying. Thanks

Where in NC do you live, btw? Never been to XX but I've been about everywhere else in this state. Oh, and you're welcome.

Barc,

I'm in Charlotte. I don't know if I've been to "EC" NC yet.

Is the plate on the firewall? Thanks

I keep forgetting they offered the SE without the titanium package in 03

Edit:
open the hood and look for a silver/metal plate on the firewall, right in front of the driver. There will be a code number...it's RS6F51H on mine.... that last "H" is HLSD. I believe it's "A" if it's not HLSD.
Just found that.

EC = Elizabeth City; NE part of the state, or the "Inner Banks" as the real estate market likes to call us. Used to live in Raleigh and before that about 2 hours north of Charlotte. A few orgers are in Charlotte. If you've not checked out the Regional Forums and would like to meet a few members, I'd suggest going there and checking it out. There are some real Maximaddicts there that know their stuff.

Thanks for the help with the plate issue.

Barc,

I've been all over NC but not the Outer Banks, only as close as Wilmington. EC and the coast are very nice I hear. If you get to Charlotte, give me heads up before hand.

man, YOU CAN ADD IT CHILL!
I put it in mine last week, my mechanic did actually. Talk to dave b, the parts to make it a locker will cost about 550 bux. Labor should be considerable since they will drop the tranny and open the case etc.
This could cost about a grand to do, but totally worth it!

When I needed my differential bearings and shaft seals replaced, I dropped the tranny myself and delivered it to a journeyman Aamco tranny guy who does work in his own garage at night. Labour was $150! (parts extra) Works great! A differential swap would be same amount of work.

Moonlighting professional mechanics are fantastic when you can find reliable ones! Ask around...

I'd like to thank all you guys for the clarification between traction control and HLSD. After checking my engine code it appears that I do have it, as I also have the drilled pedals. I feel better , thanx a lot.

Nope, still had to find a Titanium Edition with the option, it was not on all Titanium Edition models.

Yes. The aluminum plate on the firewall located just behind the throttle body.

Perhaps I was misinformed but it was my understanding that ALL Canadian 6 speed A33Bs had the HLSD. Just check the plate on the firewall. And don't waste your time lifting the car to test it. The HLSD doesn't work like a conventional LSD and will appear to not be there at all upon initial inspection.

No need to run the VIN. Just read the transmission suffix letter.

Incorrect. It was introduced in the Feb-02 models of the 2002 as an option. Priar to Feb-02, it was not available.
Do not forget the Canadian cars. They got theirs first. US cars couldn't even be ordered with the HLSD until November of 01. I essentually waited 9 months to get my car which was finally delivered on Feb. 22, 2002. I felt like I was going through Heroin withdraw waiting for it to show up.

Titanium Edition was only offered in 2003, but included HLSD.
A local guy has a '03 TE with the Ti paint and it does not have the HLSD. The car used to belong to Tony Littel.

you know, no matter how much I read up on this stuff, I could never really understand how trannys work. I mean we have a one wheel drive car. from when i would burn out, i could feel and hear the drivers side wheel doing it. I then assumed that the drivers side wheel was the "drive" wheel. But just last night, the roads had black ice on them, and I could hear and feel the passenger side tire breaking loose. What gives? I thought that was what HLSD did, that it transfered power to both wheels..

The Canadian spec cars still have to have a build date of Dec '01 and later for HLSD to be there. Mine's a Jan '02 build date, and I know it was one of the first to have it.
