Good Price on Timing chain @ Dealership.

I at the dearlship yesterday with my friend, in his 300ZXTT getting an oil change (turn out he had no oil). and while they were waiting, I figured it would be funny to get a labor quote on some of the work i need done on my car, when i mention timing chain . . . they giggles and laughed like Iw ould be putting their kids thru college.

They told me 24hrs work of work @ $70/hr, they math on that is $1680
I said but its not the chain itself that need replacing just the guide, the parts for the kit is about $60 or so, they agree and said yea the parts are nothing, its the labor that costs the most. I mention that other people with maxs same year or maybe newer but still 4th gen have done it. They told me 24hrs of labour @ $70/hr.

How many of you who have sucessfully done this did it take 24hrs.?
I just wanted to share the spectacular prices the dealership was offering.

(Vaden Nissan in Savannah)

Glad I read here on the org

but then putting a new tranny in is about $400

that seems excessive. You could get a new (used) engine put in for less than that. Find a good independent shop.

How did you know its the guides? The reason I asked is because I took my car to an independent shop because of oil leaks seeping down to the oil pan. One mechanic said its the guides and he quoted me $1200 because my Max is a 5-speed. He must think I was born yesterday. So I took one Saturday afternoon and looked around and turned out to be the front valve cover gasket. That was a piece of cake, did it myself and spent $40 on parts. No more leaks.

Just wanted to add too that my sister's 4Runner needed new timing belts, an independent shop wanted to charge her $800! So independent shops aren't always the cheapest, you just have to canvas around.

I dont have any leaks but I know a noise engine bay especially around the timing chain cover, and other rattles is a good sign, so I'm going to get the parts and ofcourse do it myself, I was just shocked to hear the price just for labour,

I double its really 24hrs of labour, but anything to keep that hamburger making cars huh?
