My KYB boots are 3 years old and look like new.

Are you sure Advance Auto sold you genuine KYB or did you get a knock off?

My rear/left KYB boot is ripped after less than 1 year. My other ones are ok though. I'm not upset but just gotta remember to order a replacement and set aside some time to swap it out. What other brands are there to consider that have bump stops already built-in?

I think the aftermarkets are better, where you can ziptie the bottom part to the strut housing. Gabriel makes them in blue, red, yellow, and black.

Is that a wise thing to do? I thought they served a purpose.

If it's not necessary I guess I won't worry too much about it.

The Gabriel, etc. strut boots that people have been using do not have a bump stop IIRC. Correct me if I am wrong.

The dust boots serve a purpose, and I would have them on if I lived in NY. I have mine on here.

my KYB AGX are fine after two years without the boots. No leaks, still stiff like when new.

The aftermarket boots that don't have bumpstops are made for shocks. You need to specify that you have struts, and it will include the bumpstop (hard plastic, like polyurethane). I had them in my Altima. Monroe also makes them. I got the Gabriel one from Kragen. They had them in stock, and if you want special colors, you can order them (no additional markup).

Found a pic. They look like these: http://www.bowers.net.au/suspension....=MONROE+SHOCKS . The black ring on the right slips over the white bump stop. then the boot goes around the ring. The bottom is zip-tied to the strut housing. It doesn't bind like KYB/Nissan if the strut fully compresses or expands.

I put a new set of KYB GR2's on about three years and 60,000 miles ago...all four boots are either torn or completely gone. Does replacement mean that I have to remove the struts? Could this be covered under KYB's lifetime warranty? (I had one of the struts replaced after 8,000 miles becuase it leaked, KYB picked up the bill).
