My Maxima in the Snow

i live in buffalo and we just got belted with a huge storm as many of you may know... well. i also just bought my 1st maxima its a 98, its got new tires. the thing is horrible in the snow! and i have no idea why, these cars are front wheel drive right?? my honda accord, 1994, was amazing and i figured this car would be too. anythoughts? how is your car? and i did put some sand bags in the trunk, will this help at all?

no matter how new the tires are, they could be crappy. What kind fo you have? If it's really bad, you should invest in some dedicated snow tires. Check the wheel/tire forum and you should find lots of reviews. I'm driving on bald continental ch95's which are horrible on dry pavement, so I'll be doing a lot of drifting around jersey. not good, but im still a student. good luck

I thought the same thing when our first storm here rolled in. I had crap tires on my fronts and it was awful

Get Snows...you'll thank me later. I only bought 2 snows for the front and it makes ALL the difference in the world. The max is a beast in the snow now!

I just got a 97 SE, and I've been driving a 93 Accord until now as a daily driver. The Honda drives way better in the snow than the Maxima does, not exactly sure why. I'm sure the skinnier snow tires are a major contributor to that, but as for FWD cars in the snow the Honduh wins hands down.

Oh yeah, don't just buy snow tires for the front. Get all four put on. That's just an invitation for a spinout, most tire stores will not even mount just two snow/studded tires on a FWD car. The first time you hit the brakes when it's really slick the car will try and swap ends.

Too much low-end torque. Plus the fact that the tires are wide with a low profiles doesn't help either. These cars need snow tires for the winter.

My wife also drives an Accord and it's like driving a 4X4 in the snow.

One of the first things I did when I bought my Max three months ago was get a set of steelies and snows. I've done it with almost every car I've driven and its always paid off dividends. Get dedicated snow tires/rims and you'll be set. I've had two Firebirds and with snows and some sand bags in the rear occasionally they were excellent in the snow.

Ditto!
My wifey bought me a complete set of Bridgestone Blizzaks MZ01 snows with 16" steelies after I got my car. I tell you, on the last snowfall we had here, I was able to climb the steep incline of my back lane with no problem. And these are now 7 year old rubbers. It was literally an ice rink and you can see the shine on the ice. I didn't even need a running start. My abs did kick in when I slowed to a stop as I reached my garage door.
My wife, on the other hand, drives an '88 BMW 325e with Pirelli M+S tires and she got stuck at the peak of that incline with her rear tires spinning last Friday night. I had to back it up slowly down the slope and then take a running start to have enough momentum to get past that peak.
When this season is over I'm taking the snows off of the steelies and remounting them on my stock SE rims.

I did not want to buy decent tires for winter too, until I spinned out on a highway. In some weird way I managed not to hit anyone except for a curb that bent one of my rims and poped the tire. Now I got all four snow tires on ... and believe me the difference is awsome.

Get snows on all fours. I made the mistake of only putting them on the front last year and spun out causing around $2000 in damage to my car.

Blizzaks are awesome, they are expensive but worth it. One of our Maximas has Blizzaks and the other has Michilin Blizzak copy cats. It is a night and day difference between the real thing and look alikes.

on the snows. I put on 4 Michelin Arctic Alpins and the difference is night and day. Now it's no problem in the snow at all, even with all that torque it tracks pretty good.

Holy crap. You have some cheap "high performance" tires pumped to 44psi and you are complaing that it's the car's fault? wow.

YOu need to go to www.tirerack.com and learn about tires before you die this winter.

I barely even heard of them. Specs? I have no idea. Try searching. Best best. Buy 2 steelies and put some snow tires on them.

Yup, gotta have snows on these cars, and like everyone has said, 4, not 2. I had a 93SE with Blizzack ws-50s, and that car was unbelievable in the snow, I was even passing 4x4s, I have a 99SE now and I bought 4 Toyo Observes, supposed to be just as good as Blizzacks and last more seasons. We've had plenty of snow here, and no problems with the Observes. Great traction. I used to run all-seasons on my other cars, and I was all over the road.
