Clearing Codes
Clearing Codes
Will turning that screw on the ECU that shuts the engine light off also erase stored codes? My engine light was on because I have one coil that quits working for about 5 minutes once every 3 months then works fine. The light was on for a couple of weeks now it shut off by itself. I need to get the car inspected and they are going to hook up the inspection computer to the car to make sure there are no problems. I want to clear any stored codes.
I think disconnecting the neg battery cable for about 20 minutes resets the ECU. Of course it still senses a problem you will get at CEL. There is a good write up in the Stickys concerning this. Check it out.
Read the stickys on how to read/decode the mesages and also correct the problems, if you know its a coil, then you can obviously figure out and know it's a certain coil, and should replace it.
No more than 30 minutes of your time and $70 out of your pocket. In the next 3 months when it goes on again, you can save about $25/mo and mark it up as a win.
