why doesnt my radar fit in the cigarette lighter?

why doesnt my radar fit in the cigarette lighter?
i just got a cobra radar detector from best buy for some reason it is too long to fit into my cigarette lighter. do i need a new cigarette lighter? or is there an adapter? has anyone had this problem.

why waste money on a new adaptor when you can just hard wire the radar to the back of the cig lighter and have a nice clean look
