How to tell when timing chain vs timing belt needs replacing?

Just wondering when/if you can tell the difference when one should be replaced vice the other. Are there particular noises/knocking you would hear for one and not the other? There is a big cost differential so please enlighten me.

From: Skokie (look it up)
chain = almost never with proper maintenance
belt = every 60k with proper maintenance.
Cars don't use both it's a one or the other situation.

Ahhh....thanks for shedding light on that. I don't know why I thought they used both on an auto tranny.

VG30E engine has belt. Autotranny has lots of parts called whatever... not to be normally changed.

Like already said; replace IF:

- 5 years or 60k miles
- dunno = immediately
- wear indication - found during other maintenance
