running w/o a hood

i know this is a ricer a$$ question and kinda makes me laugh but is there any real bennifit to running at the track w/o a hood? besides weight i would think that the air hitting the engine insted of being all aerodynamic and would slow you down?

Drag will slow the car a bit. I've even gotten to the point where I'll pull my mirrors in.

I would think that because your only getting up to 100mph give or take it wouldn't make too much of a difference on drag, but for what difference it did, it probably wouldn't make it up with it's benifits.

Will they allow you to run without a hood?

You're engine will be loud and sound awesome without the hood though

Funny you should mention it. Back in 1994 my dad lost his hood toward the end of the 1/4 mile. It was a fiberglass hood, with 8 pins on all sides. Turns out either he hadn't screwed the two front pins well enough or someone played a really bad joke on him.

He was at about 120 mph (around the 1000 feet mark) when the hood suddenly rose a foot. He knew what was coming so he just kept it on the floor (in case slowing down might rip off the hood AND get it to scrape the roof the car). The hood flew off and went real high. Looked scary even from the stands (I was 8 at the time).

He still managed to win the race (bracket) and pull off a 10.5.

On the 3rd round (next one) he ran without the hood and had dialed-in 10.59 instead of 10.44 just in case. It worked. He was .2 slower. Apparently no one caught that, 'cause on the next run they told him he needed his hood. So he duck-tapped the whole thing back on, changed the dial-in back down to 10.44 and went back. The hood stuck until the semi-finals, when he red-lighted.

Very interesting story JClaw. Trapping at 120 is a lot different than mid 90's.

The engine won't be much louder. Just pull off the fire blanket and you'll have a nice suprise.

I know. But the point is, he lost nearly 2 tenths. My point being that even at 90, it would probably make you a little slower.

He will never have another pinned hood to this day.

It probly wouldnt make a huge difference in drag, since most of the drag is created by the turbulence that occurs behind the car. It would provide some cooling, and you could definatly get some nice cold air into the engine w/o a hood. Best thing I say is try it out (if they allow it). Do several runs with the hood, then several without, see what happens. I bet everything stays about the same

im pretty sure youll need youre hood, because while waiting to run, i was driving in line and got yelled at because my hood was up, even though i was going like 1-2 mph.

Where did you come up with that idea? Most of the drag is caused by frontal area. The rear end design only makes a small contribution to the Cd.

lol, yeah just hit one of those RUN WHAT YA BRUNG ! races and say hey, the cars not finished but im ready to burn some rubber, lol ! i have been guilty of some crazy weight reduction, but not to the extent of some of these guys, removing front and rear bumpers to race ? that is funny !

I quote my Fluid Mechanics book:

"The drag force in most aerodynamics is due to the low-pressure wake: If we can reduce or eliminate the wake, the drag wil be greatly reduced."

Of course there is also force on the frontal area too... as well as drag forces due to friction of the air rubbing against the surface of the car. But that friction force is minimal (however will be increased by the removal of a hood)

NHRA rules say that you are allow to run without a hood as long as you have an air filter. And you can run without an air filter, as long as you have a hood. You have to have one or the other. I believe it's b/c they are a fire suppressant. I chose to run without an air filter with my HDM floor register acting as a nice velocity stack.

The hood doesn't weigh all that much. I removed it to do my VTC rebuild and it weighed about 40 lbs. I never weighed it though. I should have.

Ceasar, I race without bumper supports, but nobody can see that since i put my bumper covers back on.

Racing with no hood is almost as dumb as putting an O2 sensor as a mod in your SIG.

Yes, its been discussed and proven now that the rear does nothing UNLESS one or both of the fronts is dead.

even though it might have been a ricer question I've always wondered why people do this on purpose rather than getting one of those ram air hoods

Because ram air does nothing except slow you down due to drag. Only in speeds in excess of 200 MPH is there going to be an effective ram air system. Or in the odd case that the scopp has ducting to direct the air into an aftercooler or radiator. I have never seen someone running without a hood on purpose. If I did I'd laugh and point and finally, call them stupid.

ram air is deceiving - it doesnt create pressurized air goin into the car, as its name suggests. rather it acts like a CAI and allows the engine to get plenty of cold outside air.

WTF is a Firehawk? Unless its a bike your not going to experience any ram air effect besides the Cold air effect as bigdo explained.

Is the GST AWD? You still keeping the other max?
