New MAF equals new car

I installed a new updated MAF today that I bought from DaveB and WOW did it make a difference. My car was idling rough, had severe hesitation, and was low on power. My car now pulls hard thru the revs and feel like it has 30 more hp. When you guys do your 60K service, I would just buy a new MAF for piece of mind. I the MAF came with a sheet from Nissan that stated a ECU reprogram was required. Did you guys have this done? I just unplugged the negative battery terminal and left it sit for a while.

I keep wondering about the reprogram myself. I have a new MAF coming from Peoria Nissan in Arizona (DirectNissanParts.com); they've always done me right. The only thing mentioned offhand was it was recommended to get a new air filter. LOL I think probably b/c so many aftermarkets can get over-oiled and foul the MAF.

Any Nissan Techs to give us the skinny on if the reprogram is necessary or not? I've heard both on the site.

Lastly... The computer did not throw an SES code, but the symptoms seem to be agreed upon by most here. So I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Not sure...It's the update version. Call DaveB, he will help you out. Honestly, he is the most knowledgable and customer orientated person that I have dealt with associated with the Nissan organization.

Whole tube....Took me 10 minutes to install. Anyone that doesn't DIY on this project is throwing money away.

Yep. My dealer wanted 85 bucks for the ECM reprogram so I didn't do it. Some guys have said they get better gas mileage with it, but I haven't heard of any other performance gains and my gas mileage is fine. I just didn't feel like paying them 85 bucks to do it.

I keep hearing that the reprogramming is covered by the 8/80 but getting a dealership to do it is the problem. I think you have to have a good relationship with a service writer/manager or just be lucky and find a decent dealership.

My particular MAF was P/N 22680-2Y001. It was entire unit and tube assembly. The price I got was only a hair below DaveB's price ($82.86 + around $6 shipping).

The instructions said to reprogram the ECU. Mine was done last year when it threw a P0420 and made me replace the Precat. Unfortunatly I am past the 80K mark (2000 SE), so have a $98 reprogram charge, if I decide to pay for it). Dealerships just don't tell you what version software is loaded, or if the reprogram last year covers this new part, or if it's a specific upgrade for this component.

Tisucka - Just prowl the boards. I think you'll find a lot of MAF issues. My particular problem is that my RPM's sometimes drop below 700 and dive down to 200 and dies (sometimes).

Just called a couple of shops in they Long Island area. Paid 90 bucks for a dave b MAF, noone will reprogram ecu for under 1 1/2 hr labor, $150. Saying its too involved, so which terminal gets unplugged for how long?

you can unplug the negative terminal for a few hours to reset the ecu but that is only necessary if you have a cel from a bad maf. if you dont have the light then just replace the assembly and the ecu will pick up whatever change it needs.

Almost a year ago I had blown maf on 3.5L i replaced it with the maf from 3.0L (just had to transfer the thermistor from old broken maf to the new one). That made a big difference. Never had the ECU reprogrammed, no problems so far.
The only thing i only get 24-25 mpg, but it was like that since i got the car (i'm second owner)

I just installed the updated MAF on my 01 and got the dealership to reprogram the ECU. Three quarters of an hour and 45 CAN.

Buying used or new has no influence on warranty whatsoever.

That said, fat chance in getting the 8/80 to cover an ECU update. I couldn't even get the powertrain to cover it. Some people are lucky, but most are not. You will almost certainly have to pay for it, just as O2 sensors are only covered under emissions for about 1/100000000 people.

God, that makes me sick. It's so quick and easy to update it, but they know they can screw you. Don't pay $150 for an ECU reprogram.
